Chapter 28, Problem 28.10P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The HOMO from the 2π- electron component and the LUMO from the 4π- electron component can also gives bonding in a [4s+2s] cycloaddition is to be shown.

Concept introduction:

Cycloaddition reactions are pericyclic reactions that take place in two compounds containing pi bonds to form cyclic compounds. These reactions are concerted and stereospecific in nature. According to Woodward-Hoffmann rules, the polyene containing even number of bonds in thermal conditions undergoes reaction in antarafacial fashion and polyene containing odd number of bonds undergo reaction in suprafacial fashion. The total number of bonds present in the alkenes is considered in the reaction.

Which of the following statements are true concerning product distribution in the halogenation of an alkane? I: Bromination yields a statistical distribution of products based on the number of each type of hydrogen atom II: Chlorination yields a statistical distribution of products based on the number of each type of hydrogen atom. III: Bromination does not yield a statistical distribution of products based on the number of each type of hydrogen atom. Examine each of the following ALLOWED electrocyclic, sigmatropic or cycloaddition reactions. Determine in each of these how many electrons are involved. For electrocyclic and cycloaddition reaction, this includes π-electrons (4n or 4n+2); for sigmatropic reactions, one σ bond electrons also contribures. Tell what type of concerted reaction each is, and whether 4n or 4n+2 system. Thank you!
