The three writing principles I would most like to improve are short sentence usage, limit prepositional phrases, and avoid redundancy. I am consistently extending my sentences and combining what could be two sentences or perhaps even three, However, know that I am aware that readers comprehend shorter sentences better I will strive to short the length (Cardon, 2013). However, I will be mindful not to make my writing too broken up. Moreover, I will work to limit the use of prepositional phrases. I want my audience to clear see, and understand my writing. However, use of prepositional phrases do not allow me to get my idea across most effectively (Cardon, 2013). I will use a more direct approach, include verbs, and short sentences. Lastly,
Do not attempt to convey too much information in one sentence. Rather than write one long, wordy sentence write several short, clear ones.
Helen Sword, in her book, dispenses with vivid and elaborate explanations accompanied with succinct analysis. The author provides the reader with an easy-to-follow set of writing principles. What is perceive to be the most significant take-away ideas are the use active verbs at the appropriate time, the application of concrete language instead of vague abstractions, and avoiding long strings of prepositional phrases. Additionally, I value the concepts of employing adjectives and adverbs only when they are applicable in contributing something new to the meaning of a sentence. Another important idea presented by Sword is that of reducing one’s dependence on what she refers to as “waste words”: it, this, that, and there (Sword,
My main goal for the year was to improve my writing and I do believe I have accomplished that. I am especially proud of how my introduction and conclusion paragraphs have improved. I never knew where to begin with those, but now I feel much more confident when I sit down to write those parts of my essay. I also feel like I did improve on grammar, which is my weakest part of writing an essay. I still have a lot I can improve on in all aspects of my writing, but I am very thankful for this class and the feedback I have received on all my papers. I would like to wish the rest of you good luck on your finals and I hope you all have a great
Throughout my life, I’ve wrote to an unfathomable extent. Though some of my writing is favorable, I still have countless improvements I should make to my writing. I need to improve my writing in three major ways. First, I must halt my vast comma use. Throughout my writing many errors exist in my comma placement. Mainly adding too many commas, is the main problem. To counter this problem, I must proofread my work before submitting, and to be assured to have an equal balance between periods and commas. If I can apply my strategies correctly to my writing, I can hope my use of commas can enhance my writing. Furthermore, it is a necessity that I use less personal pronouns (“I” and “me” are exempted). In many of my written works, I find that not
My goal is to be able to write well, allowing readers to understand and enjoy my work. Writing for me is a process that spans a few days if time permits. I usually handwrite the draft beforehand, reading thru it several times prior to creating the rough draft. I excel at writing about life experiences or things I can relate to. This type of writing seems to inspire me more easily than other types of writing. The most trouble I had writing was the annotated bibliography. The difficult part for me was paraphrasing articles in my own words and then citing quotes from those articles. Honestly, there was more than one thing that made me overcome issues with my writing. These factors played an integral part in overcoming issues with my writing; listening to lectures and receiving great direction from Mrs. Williams, along with, reading and reviewing peer’s assignments, and practice, Lastly, having an assignment writing on a regular basis helps improve the weaknesses I had in writing. The assorted styles of writing contributed as well, by broadening my horizons and showing me other writing techniques. These techniques varied in my essays from the descriptive “Tom Brady”, and “The Barista and the Café”, the observations in “Tag Huer” the appeals in “Smoking Kills” and then finally the narrative of “The Thrill is
I was a pretty good student in high school, I got respectable SAT/ACT scores and had A’s in nearly all my classes throughout my four years there. I was considered “smart” by my friends because of my academic performance and my suspected lack of effort in achieving such. Unfortunately, this success did not come as easily as many people perceived. Of course, I maintained my high marks, but it was not without its stresses and if there was one class that I consistently struggled with during high school, it would have to be English. Without fail, I can recall the anxiety and dread that would creep over me every time we were given a prompt for an essay or creative writing piece. Personally, my creative writing capabilities, along with free hand writing, have always felt sub-par, making high school
Previously I had worried about the relevant content and rushed my academic writing without planning. This awareness has allowed me to slow down the writing process and put more emphasis on the readability of my texts. The most prominent issue within my academic writing as identified by the Writers Diet tool was an overuse of prepositions. These decreased the simplicity and direction of my writing, creating less emphasis on the point I was attempting to portray to the reader. To improve this aspect of my academic writing I will plan my texts before I write them. I am also planning to begin proof reading and editing, which is an essential aspect of writing that I have not done in the past. This will provide clear meaning in my texts and a chance to remove unnecessary language that decreases its
4.1 When writing: a. show knowledge of the function of phrases and clauses in general and their function in specific sentences; b. choose among simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences to signal differing relationships among ideas; and c. use phrases and clauses within a sentence, recognizing and correcting misplaced and dangling modifiers.
So I have become a way better writer than how I ever been in my high school career. My vocabulary has extended dramatically since being in Humanities Amp. I feel that i am a better writer, I used to use run-on sentences a lot in my essays and any other form of writing. I hate using big words, i know that means you have a large vocabulary, but i don’t really care about that. I feel that I don’t need to show that, but it is good to have it. I feel that i can improve more ,but I have become a great writer.
To be a great writer you need to be infamous through your own self doubt. The ability to evaluate your own essay and be able to give more details on your ideas. To be able to identify where you made a mistake on your writing. There’s no one in the world that's a perfect writer. Every author make mistake while writing but they always revise their writing about more than three to four times to make it better.
My writing skills improve the more I write. Challenging myself on several essays about a single topic, and meet page requirements pushed me further. I notice the more I conditioned myself avoiding ‘crutch verbs’ the more professional my essays read. I now naturally avoid crutch verbs in all my writing, they occur much less frequently in other places, like social media as well. I learned the hard way that all-nighters diminish my writing capabilities, and that procrastination can cause a lot of stress if not done right. Learning how write better MLA citations also progressed my research paper skill, though after this class I will mostly write with the APA citation method. The required book, “Brief Penguin Handbook” will assist my writing even
Writing in college varies from teacher to teacher and requires the student to adapt as such. Improving such writing skills defers from student to student also. I learn through trial and error so I will quiz myself. A better way of growing your writing skills is to read books and write a report. Another way to improve your writing is to put yourself out there a write stories online so other people can read them and give feedback. I plan to improve my writing by going through trial and error, practicing weekly with book reports and writing on a book site.
By achieving my set goals, my mind feels more ebullient. Achieving goal is the most satisfying thing for me to do. Being able to check off something i’ve been wanting to accomplish is refreshing, yet not always easy . SInce English is one of my favorite subjects, I always like to improve. Restarting and improving, the new year has arrived, which is the perfect opportunity to start fresh. First, I would like to improve my reading by better analyzing my texts. During Semester Exams, I struggled most with connecting with the story which led to not being able to write about it. Meeting this goal will be important because it will help me better understand what I am reading. This will allow me to be able to better visualize the story in my head. In
Some improvements in reading I have are that I can read faster, and I read different things. For example, when I was young, I loved realistic fiction and I would only read books from a few specific series. But now, I read other things that I’m interested in. Some improvements I have in writing is that I can write more.
In their pursuit of clear, concise writing, journalism students sometimes develop the habit of writing everything in short, choppy paragraphs that are unrelated to one another. Reviewing any good high school writing handbook will remind you that considerable thought has been given to how longer paragraphs can be developed into well focused presentations of single units of thought.
