Writing in college varies from teacher to teacher and requires the student to adapt as such. Improving such writing skills defers from student to student also. I learn through trial and error so I will quiz myself. A better way of growing your writing skills is to read books and write a report. Another way to improve your writing is to put yourself out there a write stories online so other people can read them and give feedback. I plan to improve my writing by going through trial and error, practicing weekly with book reports and writing on a book site.
Bettering your skills of writing is extremely important because writing can help you with several different aspects throughout your life. I have improved in numerous ways during this semester in Composition 1. I have enhanced my writing skills such as being able to write proficiently, and being able to form an essay in a set amount a time similar to the 50 minute essay tests in class. This course has taught me to broaden my vocabulary throughout my essays in order for them stimulating and captivating. While writing essays and creating the works cited pages, I have learned to accurately cite websites, books, and articles. I have also learned to suitably place and refer to where I found the material used for the essays within, and at the beginning of, paragraphs. When writing my essays I have learned to transition smoothly, however, I still struggle with it every once in a while, the writing I do continues to enhance. My speech has also improved from standing in front of the class and presenting a group project along with fellow classmates. I now know what it is like and what to expect the next time I do it. I have improved in many ways during this course and I feel, overall, the portfolio represents my progress greatly.
When I started my first semester of college, I was very worried about writing essays and research papers. I felt like my writing skills lacked greatly compared to other students. I knew a few things of which I could improve on right off the bat, such as my vocabulary skills and organizational skills. To say the least I was very nervous about how my writing composition course would be like and did not think it would go very well for me. However, I learned so many techniques that have helped my writing skills grow. It all started with learning how to stay organized, planning what to write in your essay in outline form and sticking to it really helped when writing essays. These techniques helped me become more confident in my essays and allowed writing essays to become a lot easier. The few aspects in which I am strong in while writing essays is my ability to stay organized, focused and be very clear about what I am writing. Nonetheless, there is always room for improvement; a few things that I can think of being grammar and punctuation due to no revising, embedding quotes smoothly, and citing sources correctly.
I was able to develop and strengthen my writing through the writing of all six of my essays over this semester. I was able to do this by having classmates per edit my work and then go over my essay and revise it. I was able to strengthen my writing skills by being assigned six different essays over this semester.
My writing skills have fluctuated throughout the semester. I feel, although, I have mastered leads and headline writing. Leads and headlines were the first writing skills we practiced and have continued to practice throughout the entire semester. The continuous practice of leads and headline writing throughout the semester, I feel confident in my ability to write concise, eye-catching leads and headlines. For writing assignment three I needed to provide a follow-up headline and corresponding lead for a criminal case. The headline had to focus on the upcoming sentencing hearing because it was the newest information about the case. In order to do so, as I mention in my blog entry, I had to write several drafts for both my headline and lead. [INSERT BLOG PICTURE] After many drafts of the lead I settled on a summary-lead because the article was a follow-up story about an established criminal case. I wrote the headline after I wrote the lead because the headline had to be a shorter, more intriguing version of the lead. After many drafts I finally wrote a six worded, eye-catching headline that was about the sentencing hearing. [INSERT WRITING ASSIGNMENT

The best way to get better at something is to practice and have peers critique your style and fundamentals. As a student, I have my professor and my fellow peers to proofread and critique my writing. With these corrections I have learned I have many new strengths and weaknesses in my writing since before I started school at COTC. I have also been given many different types of resources to help improve my writing.
Two resources that I would use to improve my writing are the Writing Lab (within the College) and the Amherst Online Resources for Writers. These two resources can assist me in proofreading my work, to identify where my strengths and weakness are and assist me with improving my writing skills. The Amherst Online outline and explained with the assistance of a directory of web pages, the specifics of College Essays. I also needed to proofread and ensure that I do not have any grammatical errors.
Effective writing is becoming a real concern among teachers and college professors. As a matter of fact, the quality of writing appears to be worse than it used to be. In past years, studies have proven that there is a constant decline in people's writing ability. The first time I picked up a pen and wrote something in English was when I was in the seventh grade, there I was sitting in my Language Arts class when the teacher made us form groups then told us to write something about the other person. The words I wanted to use, I didn’t know how to translate into English. I only had broken fragments that did not entirely make sense. I became frustrated and agitated that I couldn’t do it, so the next day I decided to start keeping a journal. This was really helpful, because by the time I became a sophomore, my writing had improved significantly. There were some grammatical errors, but at least people would understand what I was writing. To improve my writing was what I wanted to do, so I began a journey to become better.
I was a pretty good student in high school, I got respectable SAT/ACT scores and had A’s in nearly all my classes throughout my four years there. I was considered “smart” by my friends because of my academic performance and my suspected lack of effort in achieving such. Unfortunately, this success did not come as easily as many people perceived. Of course, I maintained my high marks, but it was not without its stresses and if there was one class that I consistently struggled with during high school, it would have to be English. Without fail, I can recall the anxiety and dread that would creep over me every time we were given a prompt for an essay or creative writing piece. I always thought that my writing skills were pretty good until I started this class. It has been thirteen years since I graduated high school and I quickly realized that I had a lot of “refreshing” to do as far as writing papers. I actually felt very discouraged when I took the grammar test and did not score very well. I knew that I had to dedicate myself and put a lot of effort into this class to really improve. The practice quizzes were a major help to refresh on everything I must have forgotten since high school. Being able to write a quality paper is a skill that everyone should master. Writing is such a major part of communication in this day and age so being able to write an intelligent paper will benefit you not just through school but also through life. Why is improving your ability to write important to your college education? Writing is just one way that we as humans are able to communicate with the world around us but that doesn’t mean it’s not important. In fact written communication is atleast in my opinion is equally as important as oral communication “unclear, garbled, or poorly written papers could result in your message being misunderstood or worse, you might not be taken seriously by your readers if your writing style is ineffective or doesn’t make any sense. The inability to write clearly and effectively communicate through the written word will most likely have a negative impact on your success in college. Why you ask?
