Writing Reflections
Prior to attending Mrs. William’s English Comp 1 class, I felt somewhat confident about writing however, I knew I needed improvement. You see, I’ve been out of school for nearly thirty-three years and honestly, I didn’t know what to expect. I asked myself these questions, “Can I write”? “What type of writing will be required of me”? “How well will I do”? When I stepped in the classroom and gazed about the room I felt out of my element. The students were much younger and smarter than I remembered but, I was here for a reason and that is to improve my writing. As a child reading was a passion of mine. I read often, I read more books then I can remember. As I reflect, I believe reading a lot as a child led me to become a decent

My goal is to be able to write well, allowing readers to understand and enjoy my work. Writing for me is a process that spans a few days if time permits. I usually handwrite the draft beforehand, reading thru it several times prior to creating the rough draft. I excel at writing about life experiences or things I can relate to. This type of writing seems to inspire me more easily than other types of writing. The most trouble I had writing was the annotated bibliography. The difficult part for me was paraphrasing articles in my own words and then citing quotes from those articles. Honestly, there was more than one thing that made me overcome issues with my writing. These factors played an integral part in overcoming issues with my writing; listening to lectures and receiving great direction from Mrs. Williams, along with, reading and reviewing peer’s assignments, and practice, Lastly, having an assignment writing on a regular basis helps improve the weaknesses I had in writing. The assorted styles of writing contributed as well, by broadening my horizons and showing me other writing techniques. These techniques varied in my essays from the descriptive “Tom Brady”, and “The Barista and the Café”, the observations in “Tag Huer” the appeals in “Smoking Kills” and then finally the narrative of “The Thrill is
When I first entered english composition 1101, I expected this course to be manageable. As an outstanding english student at Clarke Central high school, I believed that I had enough knowledge to excel in this course with no challenges. Dr. Catherine Rogers was able to knock me off of my high horse and make me realize that I has a lot more to learn about reading and writing. She is very comprehensive and analytical, which caused her to give me a c average on my midterm assignments. I put the blame on myself because I believe that I should have been more open to Dr. Rogers’ methods with pre-writing and revision. Now I think highly of reading and writing.
Upon entering Columbia College, writing was one of my weaker areas. It was very important that I gained the necessary knowledge and confidence to become a better writer. I didn’t know how to express myself and felt as though my writing was not my interest. As a result of taking English 101, I have gained a better understanding on how to properly research and build a satisfactory paper. Every paper that was assigned seemed like a struggle to complete. Before entering this class, I did not know the meaning of a thesis or why it was important, however, I obtained this skill quickly. I noticed that every paper has an argument and the thesis helps clarify the rebuttal. Now, I have a new outlook on writing. It’s a way to express my thoughts and allow others to see things through my eyes. There is no doubt that I still have a long way to go, but I know if I continue to write, I will get better. Just as I developed more skills in class, the various papers assigned helped to better structure the writer in me. In addition, the subject areas were not only interesting, but very informative and made it much easier to write about my experiences.
A good writer is someone who knows how to write well, have ideas to put on paper and write a well-organized essay that answers the question that a professor gives to you. I identify my own writing by not being good because I have issues sometimes getting words on paper, organizing the essay and my grammar is not very well. The methods that are effective for improving my own writing is practice writing and have someone proof read my work. I am in COM100L because my grammar is not good and my writing on paper is all over the place. My expectation for this course is to improve my grammar when I write essays and fix my mistakes when I write.
With the anxiety flowing throughout my body, I knew the time was near of facing my English 1301 class. Being told that I needed to improve my writing during my grade school days, I knew that I didn’t feel at ease going into a college level English class. But, with this in mind I had to pull myself together to encounter the challenges that I will face. However, having the privilege of having an amazing professor I believe my writing skills improved, also I was able to find my confidence.
This course offers numerous opportunities to improve our writing. In this class, I not only enhanced the skills I already had, but also learned new writing concepts. Before I took this class, I knew that my writing is poor, and I have always wanted to improve it; however, I did not know how and what aspects of writing to improve. So, I came into this class with the ambition to improve my writing, and I have accomplished my goal although there is still room for improvement. At this point of this course, I have learned the elements that successful writing is composed of, and I am now able to categorize the various techniques that can work together to define strong
From the early beginning of the school year to the current day, my writing skills and knowledge have improved and broadened over time. If not drastic, the change is noticeable nevertheless. For almost an entirety of eighth grade, assignments of varying difficulty challenged me to a degree. To be frank, some seemed as though they were beyond my comprehension and ability. However, determination amalgamated with knowledge obtained in advance helped me to overcome my doubts, for I exceeded my expectations; surprisingly good grades and comments are a delight, owing to the fact of that I don’t tend to think of myself as being proficient at writing. Consequently, the assignments given to me this school year shaped me into who I am as a writer.
As I finished my first semester of college, I was super excited and thrilled when I realized not once did I have to write a paper for any of my classes. There were some paragraphs and summaries here and there but they were pretty standard. When I realized that I was going to have to take Rhetoric 105, a writing course, I freaked out not because there would be a lot of readings but because of the writing expectations. Obviously, I am a decent writer if I was able to get accepted to multiple universities and get good grades throughout my writing career. Yet there is still this nervousness whenever I realize I have to write a paper. I have multiple struggles and strengths when it comes to writing. One of the struggles I face every time it comes to writing a paper is actually getting
Writing is different for everybody. After reading the first part of On Writing Well by William Zinsser my perspective toward writing changed; starting off by the fact that he admitted that “writing is indeed hard” (12). This author, with humorous stories and anecdotes, explained several principles that help one understand how to write efficiently. First of all, be yourself! Zinsser emphasizes the fact that you should be true to yourself and your writing in order to engage a reader in your piece. Other essential principles are: Be precise and avoid clutter. He claims that “the secret to good writing is to strip every sentence to its cleanest components” (7). As I read, I noticed how important engaging a reader becomes to an author but Zinsser reminded me how my writing was made to “please myself first” and then an audience (25). The last but not least rules to follow are: to “avoid clichés” (Zinsser, 35) and “separate usage from confusing jargon” (Zinsser, 45). It is important to maintain your reader active by expressing clear thoughts and avoiding typical sayings that only make a literary piece
This portfolio is a great example of how I improved as a writer. This second semester of duel enrollment English has helped me improve not only on becoming a better writer but as well as becoming more mature as a person and has helped me with time management. This portfolio includes the three best pieces that I have written this whole year. I hope you enjoy these pieces as much as I enjoy them.
I learned about the different styles of essays and how I can effectively improve my writing techniques and integrate them into my professional writing experiences. I know what to look for and how to improve my writing text. Knowing how to apply these techniques in my writing will better able me to write informative and persuasive documents and describe the detailed facts into my professional career writings. By knowing what a thesis statement is, it will allow and guide me to keep my argument focused when writing for my work place.
Growing up I was one of the many people who struggled learning how to read and write and was considered behind when compared to my fellow peers. Through this essay I will be covering what my personal experiences leaning how to read and write through elementary, middle, high school, college and also the effects it had on my self-confidence as a writer.
What I want to know sixteen weeks from now (That I do not know now)
How often do I spend time writing? I spend very little time writing because I lack interest in and would rather text or call when communicating with others. Personally, I probably write only a few times a week which consists of writing notes to my parents if need be. I make use of the technology in which I am given since it’s available and reliable for me to use rather than writing notes. Technology and texting has ruined my writing style and ability to write in a professional manner since I use slang and abbreviations almost every day. My plan and goal is to learn how to properly write at a college level by the end of this semester.
As a competent and often high achieving writer at a secondary level, I didn’t believe that I had significant issues in my academic writing. The score I achieved in the PELA test was shocking (6.5) as it didn’t reflect my previous achievements as a writer previously. Through the reflection and analysis of my writing for this assessment, I discovered that my skills were “in need of toning” with the Writers Diet tool (writersdiet.com). Due to its broad analysis, I went further by using the Pro Writing Aid (prowritingaid.com) and Paper Rater (paperrater.com) to uncover the underlying issues of my writing style. Associating these writing aids with the advice from Grellier and Goerke (2014) allowed me to realise, and practice, tools and techniques I previously had little knowledge about. Improving my text will involve constantly referring back to my outlined elements of satisfactory academic writing, and actively using them when undertaking formal writing. The online tools have also become an important aspect in my plan for improvement as I can
My biggest struggle in writing would be starting my introduction because I never really know what information to add in my stating my thesis statement. Although, one way I’m trying to improve this struggle is by either adding small quotes or definitions to hook the reader and to add some info about my topic. Furthermore, one essay that I feel reflects my writing the best would be the midterm essay. I picked the midterm essay because even though it was timed I still took my time and carefully picked which examples I thought would best represent my opinions. In addition, I feel using the quote “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world” by Nelson Mandela was a very powerful way to keep the reader interested. Ultimately, while I still haven’t overcome the obstacle of writing an introduction I know I’m slowly starting to find my way towards my goal of not struggling when it comes to starting my essays.
