Prior to attending Mrs. William’s English Comp 1 class, I felt somewhat confident about writing however, I knew I needed improvement. You see, I’ve been out of school for nearly thirty-three years and honestly, I didn’t know what to expect. I asked myself these questions, “Can I write”? “What type of writing will be required of me”? “How well will I do”? When I stepped in the classroom and gazed about the room I felt out of my element. The students were much younger and smarter than I remembered but, I was here for a reason and that is to improve my writing. As a child reading was a passion of mine. My goal is to be able to write well, allowing readers to understand and enjoy my work. Writing for me is a process that spans a few days if time permits. I usually handwrite the draft beforehand, reading thru it several times prior to creating the rough draft. I excel at writing about life experiences or things I can relate to. This type of writing seems to inspire me more easily than other types of writing. The most trouble I had writing was the annotated bibliography. The difficult part for me was paraphrasing articles in my own words and then citing quotes from those articles. Honestly, there was more than one thing that made me overcome issues with my writing. These factors played an integral part in overcoming issues with my writing; listening to lectures and receiving great direction from Mrs. Williams, along with, reading and reviewing peer’s assignments, and practice, Lastly, having an assignment writing on a regular basis helps improve the weaknesses I had in writing. The assorted styles of writing contributed as well, by broadening my horizons and showing me other writing techniques. These techniques varied in my essays from the descriptive “Tom Brady”, and “The Barista and the Café”, the observations in “Tag Huer” the appeals in “Smoking Kills” and then finally the narrative of “The Thrill is
