Personal Statement: Why Teach

Everyone has progressed to where they are in life because they had a teacher. A teacher is defined as someone who gives instruction and communicates skills. Our children are our future, and they need to be prepared for the future or they will not be successful in the working world. Teaching makes a difference in them, because it gives them tools to help them be successful in the future. I would like to tell you why I would like to become a special education teacher and what has led me to this decision and why I want to become a teacher.

It is work –related purpose to enter the Provincial Instructor Diploma Course. I am part-time instructor assistant for Deaf and Hard of Hearing program (DHH) at Vancouver Community College. I have worked with varied students – deaf, hard of hearing, deaf with disabilities. All of those adult students from full diversity of different sector and different religions in existing country. Not only that, some of students are fortunate enough to have already attended schools for the deaf in their home countries, and others may have had no education at all and arrive knowing gestures. Plus, those of whom from different countries and various education backgrounds from beginning to advance level in both American Sign Language and English. I find it challenge to work with deaf immigrant adults. Thus, I expect the course foundation of adult learning will help me better understanding of adult’s learning style, how to motive student’s learning, also memory and intelligence.

In life, many variables are ever changing. The only constant unchanging variable in my life is my love and passion for education. Teaching has been engrained in me since before I can remember. My entire family is comprised of educators and I have no doubt that it is what I was put on this earth to do. Many people have asked me, “Why teaching? You can do so much better than that,” and my response is simple; I want to wake up every morning and love what I do and in the process make an impact on a child’s life for the rest of his or her life.

Why would we want to learn? Learning is difficult. Luckily, we have an unsung hero willing to help us when we need it the most. The question ‘why’. It is a short and simple word, but using it, we receive the ability to learn. It is human nature to want to know more, and the question ‘why’ is the solution.

Since the second year of graduate school in Wuhan University, I have been a TOEFL reading teacher in Wuhan English New Channel School. After more than 3 years’ teaching, I find that I still need to study further on education because I did not learn much professional knowledge about teaching and education during my bachelor’s and master’s programmes.

Besides the added bonuses of teaching, the joy of being around children has much appeal to me. It is not necessarily that I just like working with children. Many people enjoy being with children but are not fitted to be a teacher. I want to teach because of the satisfaction you receive when a child learns a new concept. The most rewarding part is when you struggle and struggle for so long with a child to learn the most basic of notions. The time and effort you invest in helping a child grasp what 2 + 2 is or how to write a thesis statement is what makes the job worthwhile. When the child finally achieves the long awaited goal and can perform without help, the joy and pride the teacher feels is one part that draws me to the profession. The teacher can see the excitement of the child in his eyes, and it makes the teacher feel like they just conquered all. Moreover, I find joy in seeing children take pleasure in the little things in life. Being a teacher, the children remind you every day of how beautiful a butterfly is after its transformation, and how neat it is to watch a bee land on a flower to collect pollen. Children cherish the small things and remind you to not get wrapped up in the circus of life. Thus, I want to be a teacher because I know I will experience

I want to be a teacher to continue to serve. I have served twenty years as officer in the United States Army and I want to continue to serve others in a different capacity. Through my time in service and later as member of the civilian work force I have seen the struggles of workers and employers as they struggle to find sustainable matches. One of the answers to this struggle a is better prepared work force. However, there are segments of our country that have been systematically left out, and I want to address that.

I never wanted to be a teacher. In fact, if you were to ask my high school teachers what I would be when I graduated from college, they would more than likely say lawyer. I was even accepted into the Jefferson School of Law in San Diego because of my performance while visiting with my AP Government class. Even though I did not attend, I still had hopes of being a lawyer. But as it turned out I did not have the stomach for law, especially when I saw exceptions to every rule. It was not until after my dad had passed that I realized at the age of twenty that I wanted to teach. Throughout my student prep in Los Angeles, I learned quickly how political education was and how little control teachers actually had over their classroom.

Becoming a teacher has always been a passion of mine. Two of my older sisters teach young children. Seeing the joy they bring to children, helps me strive to be as good at teaching as they are. They have shown me how important it is to be kind and loving with children. My first-grade teacher is also part of the reason I continued to follow my dreams. She made school fun and was always caring to all the children. She made me excited about learning and made school a place that I felt important and safe when I missed my parents. She touched my life forever and I am so thankful for her. Growing up, I enjoyed school and truly looked up to my teachers.

For most of my life I have wanted to be a teacher. The biggest reason why I want to be a teacher is because I want to help students like my teachers have helped me. I was homeschooled until sixth grade, and once my parents put me into that school; I have wanted to become a teacher. Throughout my life, I have always enjoyed helping people. I always look for things that I can to do to help people and with teacher I can inspire students every day. I want to change my student’s lives, by teaching then to want to learn. I want them to have great characters and leave my classroom everyday having learned something new. Learning about each of the five philosophies has helped me understand how I can become a better teacher.

I believe a career in teaching will be very rewarding, fulfilling and humbling. Teaching will give me an opportunity to share my knowledge, experiences and make a difference in the lives of children. Seeing the incredible impact teachers make on students as they learn and grow has inspired me to do the same. I am very passionate about educating and giving children the best start to life. I believe that making school an exciting and interesting place will not only make children feel good about school and learning, but it will also increase their work ethic and academic results. As a teacher you foster creativity, develop character and provide students with the necessary skills for life. But teachers do more than just educate children, their impact extends beyond the classroom. You are a confidant, mentor and role model. I want to inspire and help students develop into the best person they can be both inside and outside of the classroom.

I decided to become a teacher for many reasons, some cliché and some very realistic. Everyone has a story that we know nothing about. That’s what I think about when I think about why I wanted to become a teacher in the first place. The cliché reasons, such as: wanting to make a difference, wanting to inspire others, wanting to help all of them grow and develop. The thing is, not everyone wants it, but everyone does need it, especially the age that I want to work with. Kindergarten.

No matter what kind of job a person is going to take, a basic question to answer is about why. Why I want to be a teacher? This is one thing about which I has to be very clear before I decide on anything else such as what type of teacher I desire, or which subject, or where I want to teach. There are several aspects that have motivated me to be a teacher. First, the significant position of education in China makes teacher a most honored and respected role that attracts me. Second, my interest in teaching has forced me to participate in a lot of tutoring, which, on the contrary, provided me chances to practice teaching still and build a solid foundation of teaching. Last, as a person with a high level of curiosity, I think teaching is the job suitable for me as it provides endless opportunities for self development.

I want to teach because I want to make a difference in children’s lives and in the world on a daily basis. Teachers’ can better the future by fostering and encouraging children’s ideas, intelligence and individual characteristics. I really enjoy being around children. You may think that you are the one teaching them a lot, and you are, but in return they are teaching you just as much. Another reason I want to be a teacher is because I enjoy witnessing children’s “light-bulb” moments. That moment when they finally understand a lesson or a concept. With younger children, and even some older children, they always keep you on your toes, so I like that there will never be a dull moment. Children have a funny sense of humor and are always happy about something. Also, I like that when I finally have a family of my own one day, I will be able to not only have a job but also have time to spend with my children. One last big reason I want to be a teacher is because I will be giving back to the community every day through the children and their education. Knowing why you want to be a teacher is easy, but with that comes understanding the purpose of education.

My teaching experience has showed me a lot not only about the field of teaching but also myself. It has helped me reflect on my current status as a teacher along with my future status as a teacher. As my teaching experience has showed me is that my strengths as a teacher is patience, planning and organization. This has helped me manage all the struggles that a new teacher faces. Getting accustomed to fellow colleagues, administration, schedules, school paperwork, etc. I know I had struggles but thanks to a fellow teacher I was able to ask him what things meant and understand how to properly do them. My strengths not only helped me get through the daily grind but also my classes. Working in an elementary school is a first and a surprise. I always saw myself in middle or high school. It has been a blessing in disguise because I able to use my strengths of patience, planning and organization to provide meaningful and insightful lessons. I can see how much they appreciate what I do by the letter and drawings they give me. It reaffirms that what I am doing is making a difference.
