Chapter 9, Problem 1LGP

Given the following information, elucidate the structures of compounds A and B. Both compounds are soluble in dilute aqueous HCl , and both have the same molecular formula. The mass spectra of A and B have M . + 149 . Other spectroscopic data for A and B are given below. Justify the structures you propose by assigning specific aspects of the data to the structures. Make sketches of the NMR spectra.

(a) The IR spectrum for compound A shows two bands in the 3300-3500 cm−-1 region. The broadband proton-decoupled 13 C NMR spectrum displayed the following signals (information from the DEPT 13 C spectra is given in parentheses with the 13 C chemical shifts).

A 13 C NMR: δ 140  ( C ) , 127  ( C ) , 125  ( CH ) , 118  ( CH ) , 24  ( CH 2 ) , 13  ( CH 3 )

(b) The IR spectrum for compound B shows no bands in the 3300-3500 cm−-1 region. The broadband proton-decoupled 13 C NMR spectrum displayed the following signals (information from the DEPT 13 C spectra is given in parentheses with the 13 C chemical shifts):

B 13 C NMR: δ 147  ( C ) , 129  ( C ) , 115  ( CH ) , 111  ( CH ) , 44  ( CH 2 ) , 13  ( CH 3 )

Propose a structural formula for compound A, C4H10O, consistent with the following 1H-NMR and IR spectra. Please assign all the appropriate peaks in the IR and NMR spectra and provide a short narrative describing what structural information each piece of data provided.
Name the following compounds A and B. How could you distinguish these two molecules by using 1H NMR and IR techniques? Propose an analytical technique to determine the iron content of these compounds. Calculate the mass percentages of C and H of compound B (C: 12.01 g/mol; H: 1.008 g/mol; Fe: 55.845 g/mol).
Following are the IR, MS(EI), 1 H and 13C NMR for an unknown compound. a) Provide the structural formula for the unknown compound. b) Explain the IR, 1 H NMR and MS(EI) spectra based on the structure given in (a).
