Question
Chapter 44.5, Problem 1TYK
Summary Introduction
Introduction:
Bacteria are unicellular organisms. They can only be seen under the microscope. They live inside the human gut, the soil, the ocean, etc. They can be dangerous as well as beneficial. Bacteria can be found everywhere in the environment. Antibiotics are the chemical that kills or stops the growing bacteria. Bacterial infections are also treated by antibiotics.
Archaea are unicellular microorganisms. They are capable to survive under extreme conditions. They are found in an unusual environment like ocean depth, salt brine, hot spring, etc. they are non-pathogens.

The yeti crab is a crustacean that lives near extremely hot hydrothermal vents, where
they wave their hairy forelimbs. Their limbs are covered in bacteria that convert
methane (from the vent) to sugars. The crabs can often be seen waving their limbs in
the water and clearing the bacteria off of their limbs with their mouthparts. Which
statement below is true of this relationship?
This is a commensal relationship. The crab benefits by gaining energy from the
bacteria, and the bacteria neither gain fitness nor lose fitness.
This is a parasitic relationship. The bacteria benefit at the expense of the crab
that must waste energy keeping its limbs clean
This is a mutualistic relationship. The bacteria have an ideal environment for
growth and the crab has a primary source of carbohydrates in a nutrient-limited
environment

Your friend Jim Crackcorn has developed a new antibiotic that damages the integrity of the cell wall by breaking down peptidoglycan. Jim tells you that he predicts that gram positive bacteria, gram negative bacteria and archaeal cells will be equally sensitive to this antibiotic. Do you agree with Jim’s prediction? If you agree, explain in your own words why you agree. If you disagree, explain in your own words what you would predict and why.
Antibiotics enter the environment in wastewater from pharmaceutical manufacturing plants, in wastes from farms where they are used in animals, and in sewage from human populations. (Many antibiotics are excreted in their active form.) The influx of antibiotics into the environment is a concern because the presence of these compounds in the environment selects for antibiotic resistance. As pollutants, antibiotics can also have ecological effects. Describe some of the ecological roles of bacteria, and explain why disruption of these roles by antibiotic pollution would have a negative impact.
