Concept Introduction:
Reduction: If electrons are gained to a species during a
Oxidation: If electrons are moved from a species during a chemical reaction. The species whose electrons are removed is said to be oxidized.
Reducing agent: The chemical substance is considered as reducing agent if it is capable of donating more electrons which reduces the other substance and getting oxidized by itself during the process.
Oxidizing agent: The chemical substance is considered as oxidizing agent if it is capable of accepting more electrons which oxidizes the other substance and getting reduced by itself.
Effective nuclear charge: It is the charge experienced by the valence electrons from the nucleus. Effective nuclear charge increases across a period because increasing nuclear charge with no accompanying increase in shielding effect.

- The reaction of calcium hydride, CaH2, with water can be characterized as a Lewis acid-base reaction: CaH2(s)+2H2O(l)Ca(OH)2(aq)+2H2(g) Identify the Lewis acid and the Lewis base among the reactants. The reaction is also an oxidation-reduction reaction. Identify the oxidizing agent, the reducing agent, and the changes in oxidation number that occur in the reaction.arrow_forwardThe amount of sodium hypochlorite in a bleach solution can be determined by using a given volume of bleach to oxidize excess iodide ion to iodine; ClO- is reduced to Cl-. The amount of iodine produced by the redox reaction is determined by titration with sodium thiosulfate, Na2S2O3; I2 is reduced to I-. The sodium thiosulfate is oxidized to sodium tetrathionate, Na2S4O6. In this analysis, potassium iodide was added in excess to 5.00 mL of bleach (d=1.00g/cm3) . If 25.00 mL of 0.0700 M Na2S2O3 was required to reduce all the iodine produced by the bleach back to iodide, what is the mass percent of NaClO in the bleach?arrow_forwardPhosphate buffers are important in regulating the pH of intracellular fluids. If the concentration ratio of H2PO4/HPO42 in a sample of intracellular fluid is 1.1: 1, what is the pH of this sample of intracellular fluid? H2PO4(aq)HPO42(aq)+H+(aq)Ka=6.2108arrow_forward
- Answer the following questions by referring to standard electrode potentials at 25C. a Will oxygen, O2, oxidize iron(II) ion in solution under standard conditions? b Will copper metal reduce 1.0 M Ni2(aq) to metallic nickel?arrow_forward(a) Write equations for the half-reactions that occur at the cathode and the anode when an aqueous solution of KCl is electrolyzed. Which chemical species is oxidized, and which chemical species is reduced in this reaction? (b) Predict the products formed when an aqueous solution of CsI is electrolyzed.arrow_forwardUsing data in Appendix 1, estimate the temperature at which Fe2O3 can be reduced to iron, using hydrogen gas as a reducing agent (assume H2O(g) is the other product).arrow_forward
