The American Revolution was a war and a time of change when new ideas were developed. It was during 1775 to 1783 and it occurred in the 13 original colonies. During the American Revolution, the Americans tried to gain independence from the British. Now that the American Revolution has been introduced, what were the major causes of the American Revolution? Over time, historians have been debating over the causes of the American Revolution, and discovered that the main causes for the American Revolution were the allowance of taxation without representation in the colonies, protests in Boston, and unjust legislation. In a British law by the Parliament, they created the terms for the Declaratory Act (Document 3). The document states, “It said that the British Parliament had the power to… make laws… to bind the colonies and people of America, subjects if the Crown of Great Britain in all cases whatsoever. The British Parliament were saying that they had supreme authority over the colonies which angered the colonists. Due to this unjust legislation, the colonists and the Sons of Liberty decided to increase their boycott on British goods in response to the Declaratory Act. Additionally, in a resolution by the Continental Congress, they tried to restore peace between the British and the colonies (Document 8). The document states, “That the following acts of Parliament are infringements and violations of the rights of the colonists; and that the repeal of them is… necessary in order to restore harmony….” The Parliament laws violate the rights of the colonists and the Continental Congress want to them to repeal them. This led to further unification of the colonies which soon led to the American Revolution. In an engraving by Paul Revere he shows how he thought the Boston Massacre went down (Document 5). The document shows that the British were at fault in the engraving and it just looked like they were killing the colonists on purpose. This ended up being used as anti- British propaganda. Once the propaganda spread, it led to further unification of the colonies which slowly led to the American Revolution. Also, in a eye witness account by George Hewes, he explained how the Boston Tea Party went down (Document 7). The document states, “We then ordered by our commander to open the hatches and take out all chests of tea and throw them overboard….” The Sons of Liberty were willing to be destructive to prove the point that they did not like paying taxes for tea and did not like how a company monopolized the tea trade. This led to Britain punishing the Massachusetts colony with the Intolerable Acts which then led to the colonies farther growing away from Britain.
