There were many reasons that the American colonies decided to revolt against Great Britain, but some of the more major causes of the American revolution were ‘ the banning of arms ’, the very unpopular Stamp Act, the Declaratory Act, and the Boston Tea & Port Acts. Another unpopular Act enforced on the colonies, by His Majesty of Great Britain, was the now-famous Stamp Act. The Stamp Act was a set of laws created by the King and parliament, saying that the American colonists had to pay more taxes than the people in Great Britain were paying, as a way to pay off the cost of the Seven Years War. This Act was upsetting to the colonists because they didn’t get the chance to have a say in wether or not they were okay with/wanted such large taxes being imposed upon them. This can be seen in Document A, when the colonists wrote in a letter to the king that “it is inseparably essential to the freedom of a people, and the undoubted right of Englishmen, that no taxes be imposed on them, but with their own consent, given personally, or by their representatives.” This quote shows that the colonists did not agree with the taxation, or at least not without them being represented in Great Britain. The King placing all of these taxes on the American colonies made them feel as if they were not being treated as actual Englishmen, but rather as the outcasts and criminals that no one else wanted.
