There were many reasons that the American colonies decided to revolt against Great Britain, but some of the more major causes of the American revolution were ‘ the banning of arms ’, the very unpopular Stamp Act, the Declaratory Act, and the Boston Tea & Port Acts. Another unpopular Act enforced on the colonies, by His Majesty of Great Britain, was the now-famous Stamp Act. The Stamp Act was a set of laws created by the King and parliament, saying that the American colonists had to pay more taxes than the people in Great Britain were paying, as a way to pay off the cost of the Seven Years War. This Act was upsetting to the colonists because they didn’t get the chance to have a say in wether or not they were okay with/wanted such large taxes being imposed upon them. This can be seen in Document A, when the colonists wrote in a letter to the king that “it is inseparably essential to the freedom of a people, and the undoubted right of Englishmen, that no taxes be imposed on them, but with their own consent, given personally, or by their representatives.” This quote shows that the colonists did not agree with the taxation, or at least not without them being represented in Great Britain. The King placing all of these taxes on the American colonies made them feel as if they were not being treated as actual Englishmen, but rather as the outcasts and criminals that no one else wanted. This is evident in the letter written to the King, when the colonies say that “His Majesty’s
Many colonists were angered because of high taxes England chose to enforce on them. These taxes were a result of the British participation and victory in the French and Indian war. However, what made the colonists even more angry was the fact that they were being taxed without representation in England’s Parliament. The colonists thought that, in order to be taxed by the British, they should have representation in it. They saw it as unfair to be taxed by a government they had no say in. As Patrick Henry said in his speech made to the Virginia House of Burgesses, “We can under law be taxed only by our own representatives...The Stamp Act is against the law. We must not obey it…” (Doc. 1). Since many colonists thought this taxation broke the law, some of them chose to protest by going to the House of Burgesses, boycotting imports, or simply not paying it in response. This response is justified; if
The best explanation for the causes of the Revolution were “A Democratic Movement” written by Robert Brown. “A Democratic Movement” claims that the main cause of the American Revolution was to protect the liberties of the colonies that were there before the British
Many people have the misconception that the American Revolution occurred because British colonists did not want to be British citizens any longer. This may have been the case for a select few, but many British colonists desired to maintain their status as British colonists and citizens. The foremost reason that the colonists began protests, boycotts, and petitions against the British was because they believed their innate rights as British citizens were being violated. The American Revolution occurred due to a chain of events and a complex set of intertwined reasons.
The causes of the American Revolution go back to the beginning of salutary neglect and the French and Indian War, as well as changes in the thinking of society. The effects of these events and other factors led to pressure within the colonies, ultimately resulting in rebellion.
This was mainly due to the colonies' refusal to live and obey British rule. The colonists sole purpose for immigrated to America was escape the British rule. Although the American Revolution began in 1775, there were various events that lead to the war's conception. Some these events were the Stamp Act which required printed materials such a newspapers to be printed on British produced paper. The Townshend acts which were a series of acts passed by Great Britain that taxed the colonies. The Boston Massacre which resulted in 5 colonists being killed after an angry confrontation with British soldiers. The Boston Tea Party which was where the colonists dressed up as American Indian and dumped British produced tea into the harbor. This was in response to the Tea act that monopolized the tea trade within America. All these events helped to spark America's rebellious nature and fight got their independence in the American Revolution
Leading up to the American revolution, there were many events which lead the colonist to justifiably rebel against King George. These oppressive acts by the crown lead the colonies to protest. Because of British tyranny, and unfair taxation, the colonies were justified in separating themselves from the British government.
There were many causes of the American Revolution, it was a series of events, that finally made war.In 1772 Governor Thomas Hutchinson of Massachusetts reported that he and the royal judges would be paid directly by London, and bypassing the colonial legislature. In late 1772,Samuel Adams set about
Great Britain and Parliament passed a variety of laws and did many things to cause the American Colonists’ want to revolt and fight for independence. Things definitely went from bad to worse when the British decided to heavily tax the Colonists’ daily used items, such as tea and stamps. British rule forced them to house, clothe, and feed British soldiers, without any Parliamentary representation. These actions ultimately led to the desire and need for independence, because the Colonists could no longer tolerate being under Britain’s rule. There were many things England did to turn the American Colonists away from the crown.
The causes of the American Revolution don’t just start at the acts that were passed, they go way back. Starting in 1763, the end of the French and Indian war. Wars are costly, so after this war Britain was in great debt, so as always they put that on the colonists, raising their taxes. Next is the Treaty of Paris 1763 when British gained land because of their win in the French and Indian War. From this gain of land, settlers began to move west making the Natives very unhappy. To save Britain from another all out war, they decided to pass the Proclamation of 1763 which stated that settlers were permitted to settle west of the Appalachian Mountains. This made the Natives happy, but us colonists felt differently. Britain should have fought for our land and our rights, instead they just gave it up to the Natives. Shows how much they care about us, right!
In 1765, the English king was terribly in debt after the French and Indian War. His solution? The infamous Stamp Act that riled up citizens throughout the American colonies. But why were they so upset? They already payed less taxes than mainland englishmen, what was there to be angry about? These colonists were upset because this law was a violation of the very rights that they inherit as English citizens by the Bill of Rights.
The next grievance the colonies faced would be the British forcing taxes upon the colonists, without their consent. During this time, Parliament was full of British people and no colonists. This was a problem because the Colonists then had no vote or say in anything they passed. Through not having any colonists vote, they passed an act that put taxes on all colonial good exported and bought. After it was voted in, the colonists were made and coined the term “No taxation without representation”. This term meant that they can not get taxed if they were not apart of the vote or in Parliament. The colonists agreed and put this into the document of declarations and resolves, and said “every idea of taxation internal or external, for raising a revenue on the subjects, in America, without their consent.”
The Actions of the colonies caused the American revolution, however the acts of the British caused the colonies to act in such a way therefore the British are the mainly responsible for the American revolution. The main reasons for the revolution were, the Boston tea party which was the first major act of violence by the colonists, and involved the king. The first Continental congress, which was set up because of the intolerable acts. And finally the second continental congress that started off the revolution.
What caused the American Revolution? Like most disputes throughout history, it started over money and respect. On March 22, 1765, nearly 250 years ago, British Parliament passed The Stamp Act, this was the first internal tax imposed on all American colonists that required them to pay a tax on every piece of printed paper. After emerging victoriously from the Seven Years War (1756-63) against the French, Britain now had one of the biggest empires in the world, unfortunately they also had the biggest debt, as a result of defending the American colonies. The British government felt that the colonies should share in the costs of the war and assist in the payment of British troops in America. Although, the British government felt the Stamp Act was reasonable and just in requiring the colonies to share the costs of their own defense through taxes, the Americans disagreed. Their pocketbooks weren’t the only things that felt a pinch, they felt their local liberties were being attacked and that The Stamp Act was unconstitutional. Without any colonial representatives in the British Parliament, colonists felt they had no say on the taxes and therefore felt they had “taxation without representation”. Aggravated colonists took
One of the causes of the revolution was that the American people didn't want Great Britian telling them what to do and how to live there lives, they wanted to be free independent people. They were also being treated very poorly like peasants. The American people also didn't have a voice they were not allowed to send their people to Parliament or vote for Britian's lawmakers. This angered the Americans which made them start to question Great Britians leadership. Another reason is after the "French and Indian war" Great Britian had a lot of war debt. Great Britian decided that since the war was fought in the colonies the American people should have to pay for it. So Great Britian started to make them pay harsh taxes this was done through the
The British were responsible for causing the American Revolution because they put unfair limitations on the colonies. One of Great Britain’s limits on the colonies was the Proclamation of 1763. The Proclamation of 1763 states that the colonies can not expand their reign west of the Appalachian Mountain and the Indians could not move east towards the East Cost (Hakim 36). Britain was scared that as the colonies grew in population and in power, along with the Indians and French that were in the New World, that they would not be able to contain all of them (Hakim 36). Britain was scared that the Colonies would continue to grow in power and the risk of overthrowing Britain was an immanent threat (Class notes). Britain thought it was best to put these limitations on the colonies to prevent that from happening. The people in the colonies were forced to stay east of the Appalachians without a say from their Colonial Assemblies. This upset the colonies and they sent letter after letter to Great Britain to try to break this law but Britain would not give the colonies any say. Britain was not the only person to blame. The colonies acted immaturely to this proclamation. The colonists thought that land was perfectly fine and did not care much about the British demand. When the colonies did not follow Britain rules, Britain was upset and created taxes on the colonies. This downward spiral continued until the colonies and Great Britain were at each others throats. They kept going back and
