Chapter 35, Problem 2CT
Summary Introduction

To determine:

The reason for the similarities found in oxygen and carbon dioxide content of blood in pulmonary veins and systemic capillaries and along with the same partial pressure between systemic veins and pulmonary arteries.

Introduction:

Veins are the types of blood vessels that carry deoxygenated blood from the living body back to the heart but the pulmonary veins being an exception carry the oxygenated blood from the lungs of the human beings to the heart. The partial pressure of gas oxygen is defined as the measurement of oxygen in arterial blood.

Sketch a picture of the right and left lungs in anterior view, showing all the fissures and lung lobes, as well as the cardiac notch.
Illustrate and trace the flow of blood in a pulmonary circulation. Label your illustration. Represent the flow of blood using colored arrows. Use red ink to represent oxygenated blood and use blue ink for deoxygenated blood. Give a short explanation of your illustration.
a. Why is a minimum flow rate of 5 Lpm recommended for oxygen delivery by mask? b. Why will an air entrainment mask never deliver 100% oxygen?  c. Briefly explain why the trans-tracheal catheter requires less oxygen flow than the nasal cannula to achieve a given arterial partial pressure of oxygen.  d. Explain the difference between a high-flow and a low-flow oxygen delivery system. Give an example of each.
