As seen at the end of Section 16.10, a deficiency in vitamin D can cause a bonesoftening disease called rickets, so many foods,
including milk and cereals, are fortified with vitamin D. Our bodies synthesize vitamin D when our skin is exposed to sunlight,
but the lack of outdoor exercise by today's children, in conjunction with regular use of sunscreen, may be contributing to a rise
in the disease. The amount of vitamin D3 in fortified foods and fish can be measured by UV-Vis spectrometry. (J. Agric. Food
Chem. 2009, 57, 2135-2146.) Using Woodward-Fieser rules, estimate the expected Amax for vitamin D3:

Select the number of each feature present in vitamin D3.
Base value (conjugated diene) = 217 nm

Certain omega-3 fatty acids can be found only in animal sources, such as fatty fish. Two of these are eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) [20:5] and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) [22:6], both of which are ω-3 fatty acids. DHA has been shown to be important in healthy brain development, so it has recently been added to infant formulas. Breast milk is rich in DHA as long as the mother maintains a healthy diet that includes fish. Draw skeletal structures of the fatty acids EPA and DHA.

Ingestion of coniine, isolated from water hemlock, can cause weakness, labored respiration, paralysis, and eventually death. In still larger doses, it is a deadly poison. Solutions of nicotine in water are used as insecticides. It is oxidized in the body to acetaldehyde by the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase. Methanol (CH3OH), also known as wood alcohol, is converted to formaldehyde by the same enzyme. Acetaldehyde is toxic, but formaldehyde is far more toxic to humans, which is why the ingestion of relatively small amounts of methanol can cause blindness or death. One treatment for mild methanol poisoning is the administration of ethanol. Why might a doctor choose this treatment? A. Ethanol likely irreversibly binds to alcohol dehydrogenase which prevents the formation of formaldehyde. B. The doctor has given up on the patient and administers ethanol for sedation. C. Ethanol must act as a competitive inhibitor for the alcohol dehydrogenase and therefore slows the formation of formaldehyde. D. The ethanol is likely an uncompetitive inhibitor and binds to a site other than the active site of the enzyme.arrow_forward
