#1: The Cotton Gin-- related to: Work, Exchange, and Technology (WXT) H.S.: The cotton gin’s significance is that it was able to greatly increase the efficiency of the cotton industry, as well as the necessity for ore slaves. More slaves were brought to the US to cater to the south’s growing cash crop economy, that would make abolishing slavery a huge problem. #2: Social Structure in the South-- related to: Politics and Power (POL) H.S.: The social structure in the southern states is very significant because it shows how the south fell back to European social structure, the wealthy being in charge of everything, and the poor with no political representation. Slavery in the south created their own image of themselves, as well as “King Cotton,” that would leave no room for questioning the morality of an institution that they depended on. #4: Treatment of Slaves-- related to: Work, Exchange, and Technology (WXT) and Peopling (PEO) H.S.: The treatment of slaves was very controversial, both the North and the South firmly believing that their way was right. Slaves were treated like animals at auctions, and were often stripped from their families when being sold. Slaves having absolutely no rights led to opposition in the North to the southern institution of slavery, which would ultimately lead to the Civil War. #5: Slave Revolts-- related to: Work, Exchange, and Technology (WXT) H.S.: The slave revolts are very significant because of the response that slaves received from their owners when the slaves acted out. In 1822 and 1831 there were slave revolts that weren't successful for the slaves, but they did have a big impact because of the fear that they inflicted upon these owners.
