Question
Chapter 7.15, Problem 7.29P
Interpretation Introduction
Interpretation: The reason as to why in the reaction of stereoisomer of the compound
Concept introduction: The elimination reaction is the organic reaction in which two substituents are removed from the organic molecule in one step or two steps. The two mechanisms of the elimination reaction are E1 and E2 mechanism.
In E2 mechanism, the elimination takes place in one step.
To determine: The reason as to why in the reaction of stereoisomer of the compound

Q11. Draw all the possible chair-like conformations of compounds 1-2.
In the presence of a strong base, compound 1 undergoes an elimination following an E2
mechanism to generate the most substituted and thermodynamically most favoured alkene
3, while compound 2 generates the less stable alkene 4. Knowing that the E2 mechanism
requires the two leaving groups to be antiperiplanar, use the chair-like structures of
compounds 1 and 2 to justify this difference in reactivity.
