Planning an innovative house. A local electric company wants to build an experimental house that will conserve energy. Company officials believe the project breaks down naturally into the following tasks (the time required for each task is given in parentheses):
1. Draw plans for house (2 months)
2. Design energy systems for house (6 months)
3. Develop new insulation techniques (3 months)
4. Purchase land (4 months)
5. Build conventional shell of house (6 months)
6. Install new energy systems (2 months)
7. Install new insulation (1 month)
8. Finish the remaining conventional parts of the house (3 months)
9. Landscape (1 month)
10. Perform tests to determine energy usage in house (8 months)
Determine a reasonable list of dependencies for these tasks, then draw a PERT diagram and develop a schedule for these tasks. Answers will vary.

- Solar energy generation along highways. The potential of using solar panels constructed above national highways to generate energy was explored in the International Journal of Energy and Environmental Engineering (December 2013). Two-layer solar panels (with 1 meter separating the panels) were constructed above sections of both east-west and north-south highways in India. The amount of (kilowatt-hours) supplied to the country's grid by the solar panels above the two types of highways was determined each month. The data for several randomly selected months are provided in the table. The researchers concluded that the "two-layer solar panel energy generation is more viable for the north-south oriented highways as compared to east- west oriented roadways." Compare the mean solar energy amounts generated for the two types of highways using a 95% confidence interval. Does the interval support the re- energy searchers' conclusion? After an earthquake, SmartProtect, an insurance company of some affected customers in the area estimates that the standard time to perform a preliminary damage assessment on an average-sized house would be about two hours. On behalf of the affected customers, SmartProtect is willing to pay a HRO employee doing such damage assessments $65 per hour. Suppose that Michael (an employee at HCRO who does flood damage assessment) takes three hours to complete the assessment on an average-sized house. What is Michael efficiency based on the standard time estimated by SmartProtect? a. Approximately one hundred and fifty percent. b. About one-third of an assessment job per hour c. Approximately one hundred and thirty dollars per assessment d. Approximately one hundred and ninety five dollars per assessment (before taxes) e. Approximately sixty seven percent.arrow_forwardThe production level needed from the agricultural sector, the manufacturing sector, and the energy sector is ..... ....... ....... units.arrow_forward
