Chapter 4, Problem 4FIO
Summary Introduction

To determine:  Which fluid is hypotonic: extracellular fluid or cytoplasm from the given figure.

Introduction: Lipids bilayers are selectively permeable. Substances such as gases, hydrophobic molecules, and water can diffuse through the lipid bilayers, whereas solutes such as polar molecules and ions cannot diffuse. If two fluids that have different solute concentration are separated by a lipid bilayer, then the water diffuses across it. The direction in which the water moves depend on the relative solute concentration of both  the fluids. The relative solute concentration is described in terms of tonicity and it is of two types, hypotonic and hypertonic.
