Concept explainers
To calculate: To identify independent and dependent variables
Answer to Problem 22E
Independent variable is “amount of time you listen to it” and Dependent variable is “battery power remaining on your MP3 player”
Explanation of Solution
Given: The battery power remaining on your MP3 player is based on the amount of time you listen to it.
Formula Used:
A variable is an one that we are trying to measure and are of two types:
- Independent Variable: That stands alone and isn’t changed by the other variables
- Dependent Variable: That depends on the other variables
Calculation:
Given that battery power remaining on your MP3 player is based on the amount of time you listen to it.
Variables are “amount of time you listen to it” and “battery power remaining on your MP3 player”
Here, value of variable “amount of time you listen to it” is not affected by any values, so it is an independent variable
Whilevalue of variable “battery power remaining on your MP3 player” will change as the value of variable “amount of time you listen to it” changes, so it is a dependent variable
Conclusion:
Hence, Independent variable is “amount of time you listen to it” and Dependent variable is “battery power remaining on your MP3 player”
