Question

) How three gene mutations contribute to penicillin resistance.

Expert Solution
Step 1

Penicillin is a group of antibiotics originally derived from penicillium moulds. They contain beta-lactam  ring in their chemical structure. They are widely used against many bacterial infections , though many types of bacteria have developed resistance due to extensive use of antibiotics.

Step 2

Three fundamental mechanism of antibiotic resistance are-

1. Enzymatic degradation of antibiotics.

2. Alteration of bacteria proteins that are antibiotic targets.

3. Change in membrane permeability to antibiotics.

Penicillin is a class of drugs that work by bursting  bacterial cell wall by acting directly on peptidogycan. Peptidogyclan create a mesh-like structure around plasma membrane of bacterial cells and prevents external fluids fro entering the cell. Bacteria develop resistance to penicillin in number of ways.
