Cask Of Amontillado

How would you feel if you were to die, plastered inside a wall? In the short story “The Cask of the Amontillado” written by Edgar Allan Poe, one of the characters die exactly like that. Montresor lures his former friend, Fortunato, into underground catacombs in a way that Fortunato couldn’t resist. Fortunato is very fond of wine, so Montresor tells him to follow him down to a vault where he could taste the Amontillado. From there, Fortunato falls into Montresor’s plan for revenge.

It is often said that revenge is sweet, but that phrase does not hold to be extremely true throughout The Cask of Amontillado. There are various themes and lessons throughout the story, but there is one theme that seems to be shown more than others. The most prevalent theme is that jealousy can lead to vengeance, and ultimately lead to the downfall, or even death, of a person. This theme is clearly evident through the two main characters, Montresor and Fortunato. By looking closer at Montresor’s words and actions toward Fortunato, it is apparent that there is a superfluous amount of jealousy between them. This jealousy that is between them ends up playing a major part in Montresor ultimately killing Fortunato, someone who was thought to be one of his best friends. The author uses the characters and their actions to develop a solid plot line and prove the point that jealousy and revenge can destroy a person, both figuratively and literally.

“Give life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot to punish an offender. But more than 2,000 years later, Martin Luther King Jr. responded, "The old law of 'an eye for an eye' leaves everybody blind." (American Psychological Association) This is a story dedicated to revenge. Where the power of revenge makes the Montresor go do insane things in order to achieve his family motto, “Nemo me impune lacessit.” Which means no one insults me with impunity. Although the story may seem like it only talks about amontillado, vaults and Fortunato’s insult to Montresor this story has a deeper message. The Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Poe, he sends a message that revenge may blind the eye towards happiness.

“The Black Cat” is an old short story written by Edgar Allan Poe an American Writer. It is a horror fiction story which demonstrate the fascinating changes that the human mind has during the abuse of alcohol. The protagonist is physiological corrupter by the abuse of alcohol and his mind play games with itself. He changes his personality as the story progresses and the way that he treats others around him. Everyone is affected by his behavior even his lovely cat. The cat becomes the object of his hate and in some way it is the first thing that he blames about his irrational acts. In the short story “The Black Cat”, Edgar Allan Poe, uses a varied forms of Irony, dramatic Irony, verbal Irony, and situation irony to produce a transformation of love threw hate along of the story.

Could you keep a gruesome and murderous secret to yourself for 50 years? A good horror story should contain suspense and fear but also should include a well-produced plot, setting, and should include literary devices. Well, the author is able to successfully accomplish this in the short story, “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allan Poe. Due to its dark, eerie and crowded setting like the catacombs, the riveting plot that makes the story suspenseful, and the intriguing point of view that helps the reader understand what Montresor is feeling make this story clearly a prime example of a quality horror story.

In The Cask of Amontillado Montresor lived for fifty years after killing Fortunato and he narrates the events of the story coldly and that leads some to wonder whether or not Montresor has changed and if he has changed how did he change. Over the fifty years between the events of The Cask Of Amontillado and the time when Montresor narrates the story, time changed Montresor into a guilty and shamed man that may have PTSD.

“The black cat” is famous as a horror story. Horror stories are normally considered as devil and perverseness. However, Poe’s “the Black Cat” talks about humanity. Optimism is found in the tale through literary confession, the tension of fabula and plot, normality and madness, five evils, and zero description of murder.

In “The Black Cat” and “The Cask of Amontillado” poe uses common writing ideas and themes to portray his dark and mysterious short stories and poems to his advantage of writing to make you want to read more. With two completely differently plotted stories somehow come together at the end for similar outcome and final thoughts.

The first –person narration style of “The Cask of Amontillado” is vital in creating the quality of the story. The story allows one of the main characters in the story Montresor, to tell the story from his point of view which gives the reader intimate yet disturbing look into the mind story teller thinks and feels which the reader doesn’t normally get from other narrative styles. The narrative style of this story is important because it sets the tone of the story. The reader become more familiar with the thoughts and intentions of the main character and this allows the reader to slightly figure out the outcome of the story and further understand the ironies throughout the story. If this story was told from a different angle I don’t believe it would be as powerful. Narration in first-person “can evoke a stronger emotional attachment with readers; from the first instance, the reader connects with the main protagonist. It is his/her voice, thoughts and feelings being portrayed; therefore, this is the person the reader is most likely to bond with” (Wright). The first-person narrative style establishes a more personal connection between the reader and the narrator, who in this case is also the main character. In “The Cask of Amontillado” the narrator uses a very familiar tone to connect with the audience as if he knew his reader: “You, who so well know the nature of my soul, will not suppose, however, that I gave utterance to a threat” (Poe, 739). “The Cask of Amontillado” is a very attention-grabbing and shocking short story written by Edgar Allan Poe. Poe was born in Boston in 1809 and orphaned by both parents at the age of two. He was taken in by the Allan family, and even though he was never legally adopted, the Allan family still treated Edgar as their own child. Edgar had a failed military career, and this lead him to becoming an author. He is best known for his poetry and short stories. In his story of “The Cask of Amontillado” the ending leaves you with a tale of murder committed with no witnesses and no one ever finding the resting place of Fortunato.

Edgar Allan Poe, the acclaimed poet, has created a multitude of short stories, one being “The Black Cat”.The short story depicts an alcoholic on his slow descent into insanity; this relates heavily to the author’s own life, being an extreme alcoholic himself. The narrator of “The Black Cat” is not only driven mad by alcohol, but also by a black cat, as you might guess from the title of the story. At the beginning of “The Black Cat”, you can tell the narrator’s alcohol addiction is taking its toll when he starts abusing his wife and pets. His actions slowly led up to him killing his cat, Pluto, and then killing his own wife because tried to defend their second cat from him. His meticulous writing style, diction, syntax, and imagery in his short stories are used to portray his emotions.

“The Black Cat” by Edgar Allan Poe is one of Poe’s greatest literary works that embodies his signature themes of death, violence, and darkness. Poe’s main character begins his narration of his horrible wrongdoings regarding them as a “series of mere household events” (Poe 705). However, this is where Poe’s satire and irony begins and the story progresses to show the deranged mindset of this character as he tries to justify his actions. As the main character proceeds to rationalize his crime, Poe is able to convey a sense of irony through his use of foreshadowing, metaphors and symbolism.

Edgar Allan Poe uses a great deal of symbolism in his story. He often uses symbolism to illustrate his views of nature. One example of Poe using symbolism in this short story is when he talks about how every time he see’s the black cat, he feels angry and paranoid. A black cat naturally symbolizes evil and for Poe to say that when he see’s a black cat, he feels anger, this gives the reader an ideal that the black cat in Poe’s short story, also symbolizes evil. Poe uses symbolism to impact the overall tone of the story by using symbolism and imagery throughout his story.

The two short stories, "The Black Cat" and "The Cask of Amontillado", by Edgar Allan Poe have a dark and gloomy setting which helps lead into the conflict in each story. The story "The Cask of Amontillado" creates an eerie and gloomy setting in Montresor’s vault. This vault only containing Montresor and Fortunato giving him an opportunity to murder and commit a terrible act against Fortunato, the one who inflicted pain in Montresor’s life.
