Question
Chapter 8, Problem 103P
Interpretation Introduction
Interpretation: The function of maleic anhydride in the given equilibrium process should be determined.
Concept introduction:
- Diels–Alder reaction: It is a [4 + 2] cycloaddition reaction between conjugated diene and dienophile which forms a substituted cyclohexene. There are no intermediates in the reaction and it is a one step process.
- Le Chatelier’s principle states that the change in any factor such as temperature, pressure, concentration will cause the equilibrium to shift in such a direction so as to reduce the effect of the change.

20. What is the correct order of decrease in acidity for the following compounds?
Carbonyl compounds can be protonated on the carbonyl oxygen. Protonation of the carbonyl oxygen gives a species whose positive charge is delocalized by resonance. Explain why acetic acid (ethanoic acid) is more readily protonated than acetone (propanone).
Step 4: In an
acid-catalyzed
epoxide ring opening, the
epoxide is first protonated and can then be attacked by
weak nucleophiles.

Weak nucleophiles such as water and alcohols can react
with the protonated epoxide.
One of the main differences between base-catalyzed and
acid-catalyzed epoxide ring openings is the regiochemical
product expected. In an acid-catalyzed reaction, if one of
the epoxide carbons is tertiary and the other primary, the
nucleophile will attack at the more substituted carbon. If the
epoxide is monosubstituted, the nucleophile will attack
preferentially at the primary carbon vs. the
secondary carbon.
