|| BIO Muscles and tendons. Muscles are attached to bones by means of tendons. The maximum force that a muscle can exert is directly proportional to its cross-sectional area A at the widest point. We can express this relationship mathematically as Fmax = σA, where σ (sigma) is a proportionality constant. Surprisingly, σ is about the same for the muscles of all animals and has the numerical value of 3.0 × 105 in SI units. The gastrocnemius muscle, in the back of the leg, has two portions, known as the medial and lateral heads. Assume that they attach to the Achilles tendon as shown in Figure 5.41 The cross-sectional area of each of these two muscles is typically [&30 cm2 for many adults. What is the maximum tension they can produce in the Achilles tendon?

- 2. Bones and Muscles. A patient in therapy has a forearm that weighs -20.5Nj and that lifts a -112.0Nj weight. These two forces have direction vertically downward. the only other significant forces on his forearm come from the biceps muscle (which acts perpendicularly to the forearm) and the force at the elbow. If the biceps produces a pull of 232 N when the forearm is raised above 43° the horizontal, find the magnitude and direction of the force that the elbow exerts on the forearm. (The sum of the elbow force and the biceps force must balance the weight of the arm and the weight it is carrying, so their vector sum must be 132.5 N, upward.) After thirty seconds of free fall, the skydiver deploys the parachute and the cross-sectional area becomes 40 square meters. Reproduce the model for the skydiver in Excel or VenSim. In VenSim you may have to make At quite small in order not to throw an error. Because you reach terminal velocity relatively quickly your answer should not be particularly sensitive to the value of At you choose. - Consider a resultant force of 80 N along the negative x-axis. The resultant was calculated as a sum of the following four tensile forces: F1 = 70 N at 50°, F2=250 N at 250° and F3= 60 N at 40° and F4 Find the magnitude and the direction of the force F4.
