Chapter 48, Problem 3CQ
Summary Introduction
To determine: The way in which the concept that “structure determines function” is related to the hemoglobin molecule.
Introduction: A gene named as globin gene is responsible for the production of proteins that have an affinity towards oxygen. These proteins are responsible for the transportation of oxygen across different body parts. The best-known example of globin protein is hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is a major constituent of erythrocytes (red blood cells) present in the blood. The red coloration of blood is due to the presence of this hemoglobin protein.

Anatomy and Physiology
1) In the clinical setting, how do we actually determine someone’s blood type?
When somebody needs a blood transfusion, the clinician needs to find out what theirblood type is to make sure they get the right type. How? You can figure this out. I’mgoing to give you all of the information you need, and then you are going to predict howblood types are assessed in the clinic.First, you need to know that when antibodies attack RBC, the reaction creates clumping, called agglutination. This is a visible reaction- you can see it happen!Next, you need to know that to determine somebody’s blood type, the clinician has a vialof antibodies that attack A (called anti-A), a vial with antibodies that attack B (anti-B),and… I know you know where this is going… a vial with antibodies that attack Rh (guesswhat that’s called!). And, of course, they have a sample of the person’s blood.Okay! Come up with a hypothesis about how you could do this. Just try to figureout how it could be…

- Red blood cell(key terms:Nucleus, hemoglobin; biconcave, oxygen, transport). 1. The function (or job) of a red blood cell isarrow_forwardDirections: Choose the one best answer to each item. Items 1 to 5 refer to the following information. In the 1800s blood transfusions were practiced; blood was transferred from one person to another. Sometimes the transfusions were miraculously successful, while at other times persons experienced pain, tingling sensations, and often death. In 1901 a scientific basis was recognized for successful transfusion of blood. It was realized that blood had to be divided into groups, and only certain types could be transfused successfully to a given individual. If an incompatible blood type is transfused into a person, the blood cells will clump together in a reaction called agglutination. Agglutination is due to a reaction between antigens and antibodies in the blood. An antigen refers to any substance that produces an immune response; usually the body reacts by producing antibodies. The antibodies fight off the antigens, which are considered invading substances. The best-known system of…arrow_forward4. You are to choose the members of an expedition that will climb several high mountains. Person B: Hb Cowtown: a leucine has been substituted for His 146 in the B-subunit. Person C: Hb Flagstaff: an isoleucine has been substituted for Val 1 in the B-subunit. For the locations of the amino acid residues refer to your text, the figure on page 9 of this lab, and the KING exercises. Assuming that each of these candidates is equal in ability at low altitude, which one would you choose for the expedition? To answer this question, determine how the substituted amino acid affects the structure and function of each abnormal hemoglobin, and describe the physiological effect. Focus on the stabilization of the T versus R state of hemoglobin, and the consequent physiological changes that might occur altitude. Keep your answers…arrow_forward
