Interpretation:
The working of Scanning Tunneling Microscope and its images.
Concept introduction:
Scanning tunnelling microscope is used for several purposes:
- For getting the position of an atom.
- Spectroscopy
- For moving atoms.
Answer to Problem 124A
STM works when a high voltage is applied between the pointed tip and the sample to extract electrons from the sample, this develops an
Explanation of Solution
In the scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) a metallic pointed tip is used that is kept hung upon the sample of atoms. The position of the atoms of the metal surface down to a resolution better than 0.1 nanometre can be deducted by drawing the current intensity versus the tip location.
Tunnelling microscope can also be used for spectroscopy as well as for moving atoms. By putting thetip current versus applied voltage and the obtained graph gives information about the electronic properties of the material. For moving atoms in some materials one can bring the tip very close to the atom then raises it and move it somewhere else. Therefore STM can be used for multi-purposes.
STM used forgetting the position of an atom, Spectroscopy as well as for moving atoms.
