Concept explainers
What is meant by (a) crystalline solid, (b) long-range order, (c) short range order, and (d) amorphous.
Explanation of Solution
(a)
Crystalline solid:
A solid containing ordered, repeating and three-dimensional
(b)
Long-range order:
When the arrangement of atoms is periodic and repeating everywhere in its crystalline structure with same geometric environment, then it is referred as long-range order.
(c)
Short-range order:
The arrangement of atoms which are local or restricted to definite areas of the materials is referred as short-range order.
(d)
Amorphous:
When there is zero organized arrangement of atoms in which the atoms are positioned randomly in the structure, then it is referred as amorphous.
