Concept introduction:The virus envelope comprises hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA) proteins. HA can be divided into 16 subtypes whereas NA can be of 9 subtypes. Depending upon the type of flu, the viruses are designated names such as H1N1 (influenza A virus) associated with swine flu (seasonal) or H5N1 that causes bird flu.
