Chapter 3, Problem 96PP
Alice (A), Bob (B), and Carrie (C) all start from their dorm and head for the library for an evening study session. Alice takes a straight path, while the paths Bob and Carrie follow are portions of circular arcs, as shown in Fig. 3.28. Each student walks at a constant speed. All three leave the dorm at the same time, and they arrive simultaneously at the library.
Which statement characterizes the distances the students’ displacements?
- a. They’re equal.
- b. C > A > B
- c. C > B > A
- d. B > C > A

Gordon likes to take his dog for a walk on the beach each morning. The beach near his home is quite large, so he can park his car on it. He has a routine that he likes to stick to. Gordon parks his car at a point C that is 34◦ west of south of a point L where the lifeguard sits. He then walks in a straight line from his car to L. Next, he changes direction and walks due south along the shoreline in a straight line for 1200 metres until he reaches a large rock R, where he turns again and heads straight back to his car, which is 740 metres from the large rock. (You may assume that the beach is flat and all distances are measured in a straight line.)
(iii) Find the distance between Gordon’s car and the lifeguard. Give your answer correct to two significant figures.

(You may assume that the beach is flat and all distances are measured in a straight line.)
(a) Sketch a diagram of the situation, showing the points C for the position of Gordon’s car, L for the position of the lifeguard, and R for the position of the rock. Mark in the angle and the lengths that you are given. Join the three points with line segments to make the triangle CLR, given that the angle at C is an acute angle.
Several people stand on a bridge over a river. The bridge is not level, so the people are all different heights above the river. Each person throws a stone to the river.
a) The first person is 26.8 m above the river and throws her stone with a speed of 16.6 m/s at an angle of 6 degrees to the horizontal (positive degrees are above horizontal, negative degrees are below). How long does it take her stone to hit the water, in seconds?
b) The second person is 19.0 m above the river and throws his stone with a speed of 17.1 m/s at an angle of -21.4 degrees to the horizontal (positive degrees are above horizontal, negative degrees are below). What is the range of his stone, in meters?
c)The third person is 9.1 m above the river and throws their stone with a speed of 6.5 m/s at an angle of 9.3 degrees to the horizontal (positive degrees are above horizontal, negative degrees are below). What is the speed of this stone (in m/s) just before it strikes the river?
