Chapter 23, Problem 1TQ
Summary Introduction
To review:
The possibility of crossing the placental barrier by microbial pathogens.
Introduction:
The placenta is the structural and functional unit between the maternal body and the developing embryo. It is formed by the interdigitating between chorionic villi and uterine tissue that provides nutrients and oxygen to the developing embryo. Other than transporting nutrients, the placenta removes CO2 (Carbon dioxide) and waste from the embryo and also acts as an endocrine gland. The development of normal microbiota in a developing fetus is largely determined by the already developed biota in the mother.

The vertical transmission of certain communicable diseases from mother-to-child during pregnancy and birth is of great concern to public health practitioners because it represents a critical period for intervention. If practitioners can determine at birth whether the disease has been transmitted from mother-to-child, they can act immediately to provide the child with treatment.
Syphilis is a disease with high risk for vertical transmission from mother-to-child. If a child becomes infected and is not treated, there can be negative health outcome such as blindness, deafness, and neurological damage. Inspired by the advent of rapid HIV tests that provide quick results and are minimally invasive, suppose that researchers have been working to develop a similar test that can be used for syphilis. After obtaining appropriate institutional approval and patient consent, the researchers test their rapid syphilis test at several birthing hospitals and compare it to the gold standard laboratory…

- section 3:Acne is a common skin disease affecting up to 80% of adolescents and young adults, and is characterized by the formation of comedones, papules, pustules, and nodules on the face, neck, chest, and back. The pathogenesis of acne is complex and involves several molecular mechanisms, including increased sebum production, altered keratinization, bacterial colonization, and inflammation. The main molecular players in acne pathogenesis are androgens, sebum, Propionibacterium acnes, toll-like receptor (TLR) signaling, and pro-inflammatory cytokines. Androgens, such as testosterone, stimulate the sebaceous glands to produce excess sebum, which then accumulates in hair follicles and contributes to comedone formation. The overproduction of sebum also alters the skin microenvironment and promotes the growth of P. acnes, a commensal bacterium that can become pathogenic and exacerbate inflammation.acnes stimulates the TLR2 and TLR4 receptors on immune cells, leading to the activation of…arrow_forwardsection 3:Acne is a common skin disease affecting up to 80% of adolescents and young adults, and is characterized by the formation of comedones, papules, pustules, and nodules on the face, neck, chest, and back.
