Chapter 22, Problem 21STP
To determine

The concentration of HCl with respect to that of NaOH .

Expert Solution & Answer

Answer to Problem 21STP

The HCl solution is twice as concentrated as the NaOH solution.

Explanation of Solution

Given:

Volume of HCl = 25.0 ml

Volume of NaOH required to neutralize 25.0 ml of HCl = 50.0 ml

Calculation:

As per the problem,

Let the concentration of HCl be x mole/ml and that of NaOH be y mole/ml .

HCl is a strong acid and NaOH is a strong base. They both dissociate completely to produce H+ and OH ions.

For neutralization, the concentration of H+ and OH ions should be equal in the solution, that is, at neutralization, 1mole/ml of H+ = 1mole/ml of OH

Therefore,

  25 ml of x mole/ml HCl= 50 ml of y mole/ml NaOH25 mlx mole/ml=50 mly mole/mlx mole/ml=(50 ml)(y mole/ml)25 mlx mole/ml=2y mole/ml

Conclusion: The HCl solution is twice as concentrated as the NaOH solution.
