Answer to Problem 60A

  2.3×1039

Explanation of Solution

Given:

It is known that,

The mass of electron, me=9.10×1031kg

The mass of proton, me=1.67×1027kg

The charge on proton, qp=1.6×1019C

The charge on electron, qe=1.6×1019C

Formula used:

The electrostatic force between two charges, q1 and q2 , r distance apart is given by,

  F=14πε0q1q2r2

Where, ε0=8.85×1012F/m is permittivity of free space.

And, Law of Universal Gravitation,

  F=Gm1m2r2

Where, G is the gravitational constant, m1 and m2 are the masses, and r is the distance between the masses.

It is known that the value of gravitational constant is,

  G=6.67×1011N.m2/kg2

Calculation:

Let the distance between the electron and proton be r .

Then, the magnitude of the electrostatic force between the electron and proton is,

  FE=|14πε0qpqer2|=14πε0qe2r2

And, the gravitational force between them is,

  FG=Gmpmer2

Then, the ratio of the electrostatic force to the gravitational force between electron and proton will be,

  FEFG=(14πε0qe2r2)(Gmpmer2)FEFG=(qe2)(4πε0Gmpme)=(1.6×1019)2(4π×8.85×1012×6.67×1011×1.67×1027×9.10×1031)=2.3×1039

Conclusion:

Hence, the ratio of the electrostatic force to the gravitational force between electron and proton is 2.3×1039 .
