Chapter 20, Problem 26P

Answer the following questions regarding material condition modifiers.

(a)    What are the three material condition modifiers?

(b)    Which one is the default if nothing is specified?

(c)    Which one(s) can provide “bonus” tolerance?

(d)    Which of the following is increased by a bonus tolerance? (Select one.)

  1.                     i.            A size dimension.
  2.                  ii.            A ± tolerance of a size dimension.
  3.                iii.            A basic dimension locating a feature.
  4.                 iv.            A size of a tolerance zone controlling a feature.

(e)    To which of the following can a material condition modifier symbol be applied? (Select one.)

  1. i.                    A size dimension.
  2. ii.                  A ± tolerance of a size dimension.
  3. iii.                A tolerance of a geometric characteristic controlling a feature of size.
  4. iv.                A tolerance of a geometric characteristic controlling any feature.

(f)    Which material condition modifier should be considered if the goal is to ensure a minimum clearance fit for a bolt in a hole, but to give greater manufacturing flexibility if the hole is produced with a greater clearance?

(g)    Which material condition modifier should be considered if the goal is to provide a consistent press fit between interchangeable parts?

(h)    Which material condition modifier should be considered if the goal is to ensure a minimum wall thickness for a casting, but to give greater manufacturing flexibility if the wall is produced with a greater thickness?

13. What type of geometric tolerance has no datum features? 14. A theoretically exact dimension is called a 15. The feature symbol specifies that a group of two or more interrupted features of size are to be considered one single feature of size. 16. For an individual regular feature of size, no element of the feature shall extend beyond the maximum material condition boundary (envelope) of perfect form. This statement is the essence of 17. What is the name of the symbol used to identify physical features of a part as a datum feature and must not be applied to centerlines, center planes, or axes? 18. The is the condition in which a feature of size contains the maximum amount of material within the stated limits of size. 19. The total positional tolerance equals the sum of the tolerance and the tolerance. 20. Refer to the figure below. Read the feature control frame in the figure and write it out below. Ø 010M ABMCM

In the context of our teaching, which one of the below statements is mostly correct about in detailed design of a component? In the reporting, I do not need to include the reasoning for my design decision for a good quality report. I cannot use appendix, so I am struck with the word limit for reporting. For a good clarity, I should not explicitly report what are the key dimensions and their tolerances in the drawing and in the body of text. The word count limit for detailed design report is 160O.
