Figures (1) and (2) show how springs can be used to support a block in two different situations. In Fig. (1), they help decrease the amplitude of the fluctuating force transmitted by the block to the foundation. In Fig. (2), they help decrease the amplitude of the fluctuating displacement transmitted by the foundation to the block. The ratio of the transmitted force to the impressed force or the ratio of the transmitted displacement to the impressed displacement is called the transmissibility. Derive an equation for the transmissibility for each situation. Give your answer in terms of the ratio wf/wn of the frequency wf of the impressed force or impressed displacement to the natural frequency wn of the spring-mass system. Show that in order to cause any reduction in transmissibility, the ratio wf/wn must be greater than V2
1. The free-fixed rod ( length of 2 m, diameter of 0.5 mm, density of 300 kg/m) vibrates in lengthwise direction
(longitudinal vibration).
(a) Determine the Young's modulus so that the first natural frequency is 500 Hz.
(b) For this rod, calculate the second natural frequency.
A motor, turning at 1800 rpm, in a machine is slightly out of balance. It causes the machine to
vibrate vertically. In order to measure the amplitude of the machine vibration a device consisting
of a mass is attached to a cantilever beam as shown. The device has a scale so that the amplitude
of the vibration of the mass, 8, can be measured. If 8 = 3.2 mm what is z the amplitude of the
machine vibration. The mass at the end of the cantilever is m = 1 kg and the spring constant of
the cantilever is k = 50 x 10³ N/m.
