Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The structure of the product with molecular formula C17H16O6 formed when the triene shown reacts with 2 equivalents of maleic anhydride is to be given.
Concept introduction:
The reaction given involves two Diels-Alder reactions. In Diels-Alder reaction, a dienophile reacts with a diene to yield a cyclic adduct. The reaction takes place through 1,4 addition of the dienophile into the diene through a cyclic transition state. These reactions occur rapidly with dienophiles having electron withdrawing substituent groups in conjugation with the double bond and if the diene adapts a s-cis conformation during the reaction.
To give:
The structure of the product with molecular formula C17H16O6 formed when the triene shown reacts with 2 equivalents of maleic anhydride.

The reaction occurs with Markovnikov regiochemistry, so the OH group adds to the more highly substituted carbon and the H adds to the less highly substituted carbon. The initial product of the reaction is a vinyl alcohol, also called an enol. The enol immediately rearranges to a more stable ketone via tautomerization. - Compounds A, B, and C have the same molecular formula C4H8. They all react wotu H2/PtO2 to give the same compound. The reaction of A or B with H2O/H2SO4 or with BH3-THF, followed by treatment with a basic solution of hydrogen peroxide, gives the same compound, namely D. The reaction of C with H2O/H2SO4 also gives D. However, the reaction of C with BH3-THF, followed by HO-, H2O2 gives a new compound, E. - Compound A has the formula C₂H₁9Cl. B is a C₂H19Br compound. A and B undergo base-promoted E2 elimination to give the same alkene C as the major product as well as different minor products. C reacts with one molar equivalent of hydrogen in the presence of a palladium catalyst to form 2,6-dimethylheptane. Addition of HCI to C yields A as the major product.
