Dietary Supplement Researchers in Germany tested the effect of a dietary supplement designed to control metabolism in patients with type 2 diabetes. Thirty-one patients with type 2 diabetes completed the study. The patients were assigned at random cither the supplement or a placebo for 12 weeks. After a subsequent “wash-out” period of 12 weeks, the patients were assigned the other product. At the conclusion of the study, the patients’ glycated hemoglobin, fasting blood glucose, and fructosamine levels were checked, as well as their lipid parameters. - (a) Identify the experimental units and treatments used in this experiment.
- (b) Identify a potential problem with the experimental design being used and suggest a way to improve it.
- (c) The experiment is described as a placebo-controlled, double-blind study. Explain what this means.
- (d) How could blocking be used in designing this experiment?

- Most cases of cervical cancer are linked to a few strains of the human papilloma virus (HPV). The pharmaceutical company Merck developed a vaccine (Gardisil) against these HPV strains. Worldwide clinical trials followed young women after vaccination or administration of placebo for two to four years for signs of HPV-caused cervical cancer. Based on a sample of 100 women in the Gardisil group, 24 % developed cervical cancer, and based on a sample of 100 women in the placebo group, 34 % developed cervical cancer. Test the claim that the proportion of women who developed cervical cancer in the Gardisil group is less than the proportion of women who developed cervical cancer in the placebo group at a = 0.10. Round your answers to three decimal places, and round any interim calculations to four decimal places. Fill in the hypotheses below where p₁ denotes the proportion of women who developed cervical cancer in the Gardisil group and P2 denotes the proportion of women who developed cervical…arrow_forwardMost cases of cervical cancer are linked to a few strains of the human papilloma virus (HPV). In one study of the use of arsenic to treat acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL), a rare type if blood cancer, APL patients were given an arsenic compound as part of their treatment. Of those receiving arsenic, 32% were in remission and showed no signs of leukemia in subsequent examination. It is known that 18% of APL patients go into remission after conventional treatment. Suppose that the study had included 100 randomly selected patients. Is there sufficient evidence to conclude that the proportion in remission for the arsenic treatment is greater than 0.18, the remission proportion for conventional treatment? a. Test the hypothesis at the 0.01 significance level. b. Construct and interpret a 99% confidence interval for the true proportion of APL patients who go into remission after using arsenic. Does the inference drawn from this interval match the conclusion from the test that you did in part…arrow_forward
- Researchers wanted to know the effectiveness of a new anti-venom shot. A study was conducted on 245 children who had nonlethal scorpion stings. The ages of the children ranged from 6 months to 18 years old. Each child was randomly assigned to receive a shot of the anti-venom or a placebo shot. Researchers recorded whether or not their condition improved over the next four hours. They found that about 73% of the children who were given anti-venom saw an improvement in their condition whereas only about 23% of the children who were given the placebo saw an improvement in their condition. Identify the population. The population is all children 6 months to 18 years old with nonlethal scorpion stings. Identify the sample. The sample is 245 children 6 months to 18 years old with nonlethal scorpion stings. What is the treatment variable? The treatment variable is the anti-venom shot. What is the response (or outcome) variable? The outcome variable is improvements in their condition.…arrow_forwardMost cases of cervical cancer are linked to a few strains of the human papilloma virus (HPV). - A study examined the impact of THC, the active ingredient in marijuana, on various physiological and psychological variables. The study recruited a sample of 18 young adults who were habitual marijuana smokers. Participants came to the lab 3 times, each time completing the entire series of tests and questionnaire, but each time smoking a different marijuana cigarette: one with 3.9% THC, one with 1.8% THC, and one with no THC, a placebo. The order of the conditions was randomized and participants were not told how much THC was in the cigarette they smoked until after all the data were collected. This is an example of a completely randomized experiment. O a case-control observational study. an anecdotal evidence. O a matched pairs or repeated measures experiment.
