Question
Chapter 1.13, Problem 31ATS
Interpretation Introduction
Interpretation: The compound that has higher boiling point should be identified amongst product 3 and 4.
Concept Introduction: The temperature at which transition of a substance takes place from liquid to gaseous state is said to be its boiling point. At boiling point, the vapor pressure and applied pressure on the liquid become equal. There is a direct relationship between the interaction present in molecule and the boiling point of the molecule. The molecule that has stronger interaction between its atoms/molecules possess higher boiling point and vice-versa.

In an experiment, triphenylmethanol is prepared using the Grignard reaction. The Grignard reaction involves preparation and reaction of a very nucleophilic organo-magnesium compound. The Grignard reagent is very reactive and is easily destroyed by reaction with atmospheric water, oxygen, or carbon dioxide. The Grignard reagent must be prepared under strict anhydrous conditions (dry glassware, dry solvent). The volative solvent, diethyl ether, helps to prevent oxygen or carbon dioxide from entering the reaction vessel. Reaction of bromobenzene with magnesium in ether produces phenylmagnesium bromide. This Grignard reagent then reacts with methyl benzoate to produce the corresponding alkoxide. Reaction of the alkoxide with aqueous acid then produces the alcohol.

Ethanol is often present in the technical grade of diethyl ether. If this grade rather than anhydrous were used, what effect, if any, would the ethanol have on the formation of the Grignard reagent? Explain.
A task is assigned to an undergraduate student to test two samples (known as
compounds K and L) in the laboratory. She placed these two compounds through
various scientific tests. She discovered that these compounds have the same
molecular formula, CSHSO. When treated with 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine, all of
these compounds produce brightly coloured precipitate, and both are reduced to an
organic compound with the molecular formula C§H100. However, compound K can
be easily oxidized by chromic acid to formed compound N and vice versa for
compound L. Furthermore, when both compounds react with Fehling's solutions,
they produce negative results. However, only compound K forms a silver mirror
when it reacts with Tollen's reagent, and compound L does not.
Identify the possible structural formulae for compounds K, L, and N by ignoring
their position isomerism.
Indicate the formation of compound N from compound K.
Predict the chemical reaction that occurs when compound L reacts with 2,4-…

- Some alcohols undergo rearrangement or other unwanted side reactions when they dehydrate in acid. Alcohols may be dehydrated under mildly basic conditions using phosphorus oxychloride (POCl3) in pyridine.
