4. A typical coal-fired power plant operates with a high-temperature reservoir at Th = 800 K and a low-temperature reservoir at Tc = 300 K.
What is the maximum efficiency allowed by the 2nd law of thermodynamics (the Carnot efficiency) for a heat engine operating between these temperatures? Give your answer as a decimal number, not as a percentage.
(This isn't in section 4.2, so you might want to also take a quick look at equation 4.5 in section 4.5 of the textbook, or at the introductory material in this week's lab write-up.)
Prepare a table like Table 12.3 for the following occurrence: You toss four coins into the air simultaneously and record all the possible results of the toss in terms of the numbers of heads and tails that can result. (For example, HHTH and HTHH are two possible ways in which three heads and one tail can be achieved.) (a) On the basis of your table, what is the most probable result of a toss? In terms of entropy, (b) what is the most ordered state, and (c) what is the most disordered?
The temperature in the deep interiors of some giant molecular clouds in the Milky Way galaxy is 50 K. Compare the amount of energy that would have to be transferred to this environment to the amount that would have to be transferred to a room temperature environment to bring about a 7.7 J/K increase in the entropy of the universe in each case.
