For Problems 3–11, please provide the following information.
- (a) What is the level of significance? State the null and alternate hypotheses.
- (b) Find the value of the chi-square statistic for the sample. What are the degrees of freedom? What assumptions are you making about the original distribution?
- (c) Find or estimate the P-value of the sample test statistic.
- (d) Based on your answers in parts (a) to (c), will you reject or fail to reject the null hypothesis of independence?
- (e) Interpret your conclusion in the context of the application.
- (f) Find the requested confidence interval for the population variance or population standard deviation. Interpret the results in the context of the application.
In each of the following problems, assume a
Veterinary Science: Tranquilizer Jim Mead is a veterinarian who visits a Vermont farm to examine prize bulls. In order to examine a bull, Jim first gives the animal a tranquilizer shot. The effect of the shot is supposed to last an average of 65 minutes, and it usually does. However, Jim sometimes gets chased out of the pasture by a bull that recovers too soon, and other times he becomes worried about prize bulls that take too long to recover. By reading journals, Jim has found that the tranquilizer should have a mean duration time of 65 minutes, with a standard deviation of 15 minutes. A random sample of 10 of Jim’s bulls had a mean tranquilized duration time of close to 65 minutes but a standard deviation of 24 minutes. At the 1% level of significance, is Jim justified in the claim that the variance is larger than that stated in his journal? Find a 95% confidence interval for the population standard deviation.

- What is meant by the sample space of an experiment?arrow_forwardTime magazine reported the result of a telephone poll adult Americans. The question posed of the Americans who were surveyed was: "Should the federal tax on cigarettes be raised to pay for health care reform?" The results of the survey were: Non-Smokers n1-395 Yes 272 Smokers n2 327 Yes 194 Calculate the appropriate test statistic, correct to two deomal places, to test whether Smokers and Non-Smokers differ significantly with respect to their opinions.arrow_forwardThe claim is that the proportion of adults who smoked a cigarette in the past week is less than 0.30, and the sample statistics include n=1126 subjects with 327 saying that they smoked a cigarette in the past week. - The following data are the monthly salaries and the grade point averages for students who obtained a bachelor's degree in mathematics. GPA: 2.6, 3.4, 3.6, 3.2, 3.5, and 2.9; Monthly Salary: 3300, 3600, 4000, 3500, 3900, and 3600. Use the t-test to test the hypotheses at 5% level of significance.arrow_forwardDr. Kijowski is concerned about student phone use, so she collects information on the number of text messages that each student sent on a particular day. The boxplot below shows the results. Based on the boxplot, which of the following is the most reasonable conclusion? a There are more people with data values below the median than there are people with data values above the median. b There are more people with data values between the first quartile and the median than there are people with data values between the median and the third quartile. c There are fewer people with data values between the first quartile and the median than there are people with data values between the median and the third quartile. d There are approximately the same number of people with data values between the first quartile and the minimum as there are people with data values between the third quartile and the maximum. e The data are less spread out between the first…arrow_forwardWe want to investigate the connection of two factors with IQ.
