Question
Why does blowing gently across the surface of a cup of hot coffee help to cool it? Why does inserting a spoon into the coffee do the same thing?
Expert Solution
Step 1

The gentle blowing across the surface of a hot coffee cup increases heat transfer from hot coffee to the air. The air surrounding the surface of hot coffee is hot and contains more moisture than the air, which is blown over the coffee. The blown air temperature is less and has less moisture content, increasing the heat transfer rate from the hot coffee cup.

The blown air also produces turbulence over the coffee surface, which results in the movement of a coffee particle within the cup. So the hot particles of coffee resting below the cold particles come on the surface and exchange heat more quickly and efficiently. This also helps in cooling the cup of coffee.
