Question

A solution of a specific vitamin has λmax = 324 nm and a molar absorptivity (ϵ) of 0.081 L·mol-1cm-1. The concentration of the solution is 1.6 M. Calculate the absorbance of the vitamin solution at 324 nm (sample pathlength = 1.00 cm)

Expert Solution
Beer - Lambert's law

** This question can be solved with the help of Beer - Lambert's law

**Beer - lambert's law states that , "when a beam of monochromatic radiation passes through a solution of an absorbing substance , the rate of decrease of intensity of radiation with thickness of the solution is directly proportional to the intensity of incident radiation as well as the concentration of the solution ".

** That is A = C l , where A = log (I0 / I) , Absorbance  .

                                            = molar absorption coefficient

                                            C  = concentration

                                            l = length

** Beer - lambert's law is valid only if , it is a dilute solution , no solute - solvent interaction and with change in concentration - state of solute should not change .
