In 2012 youth ages 15-24 were more than twice as likely to be laid of compared to those older than 25. The monthly layoff rate for youth was 3.5% while the rate for workers 25-54 was 1.3%. Workers 55 plus had a rate of 1.5% (Stats Canada,2013). In todays society youth enter the workforce unprepared, uneducated and unexperienced which leads to these high rates of unemployment and layoffs. Schools are not teaching the valuable lessons and skills youth need to enter the workforce with an advantage not a disadvantage. Although the schools are responsible for teaching the kids it is in fact the government who is responsible for offering more programs and proper programs to schools. This program is expanding and the students are responding remarkably well to the project, most saying the material being taught to them is extremely helpful.(Shea,2014) With the success of the program thus far, government should take the ideas and goals of this program and increase the number of programs offered in and out of schools. Types of programs that are already operating, and require an increase are programs like The Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP) and The Summer Work Experience program (Government of Canada,2016) which both focus on getting youth the experience and knowledge they need to be a valuable worker, they do this by placing youth into temporary jobs most government based or controlled. Another type of program already operating that increases are needed are The Skills Link Program, Career focus program and Youth Employment Strategy (Government of Canada,2016). These programs are all focused on teaching youth the skills and knowledge to achieve a job and secure themselves in the job, as well as helping with the transition from school to work.
