Is entertainment destroying or benefiting modern society? There is no doubt that entertainment is the main source of amusement for many today. It is used in almost every common man’s daily life, from watching TV to listening to the news. However, entertainment has unfortunately become deeply saturated in people’s lives, to the point where it is no longer healthy or beneficial. The utilization of entertainment has become an addiction, thus giving it the capability to annihilate society. From the adult industry to television shows, one conclusion is inescapable” entertainment is, indeed, a dangerous tool. The adult-entertainment industry erupted in the late twentieth century and has expanded recently due to improved technology. Millions of men and women alike watch these films and arrive to the conception that what is portrayed on the screen is how a relationship should be. In a recent article in the New York Times, it was reported that 80% of men and 50% of women feel that their sex life is lacking due to pornography, and 40% of the people within the same poll have broken up with their spouse or partner due to the “lack” of love life. Clearly, the adult entertainment gives both genders a false conception of how a relationship and sex life should be. Pornography portrays sex as overly exciting and thrilling, which can lead to dissatisfaction with one’s partner. Such a situation can cause a rift between couples that can result in divorce and break-ups, which leads to fewer
The values of entertainment have been a popular discussion for a long time. Some claim that it is wholesome and fun, while others believe entertainment will “involve our country in ruin”. I believe that, although it can be detrimental as a form of escapism, entertainment is mostly a benefit to society, thanks to its educational and economic facets.
Pornography is commonly used in many cultures across the world. Within the United States, alone, roughly 40 million people regularly visit porn sites (Streep, 2014). And yet, despite its growing popularity, only a handful of studies have explored pornography’s potential effects on sexual satisfaction for those in exclusive relationships (Bridges & Morokoff, 2011; Daneback et al., 2009; Maddox et al., 2011; Stewart & Szymanski, 2012; Stulhofer et al., 2010; Zillmann & Bryant, 1988). As using pornography can potentially have negative effects on both the user’s and their intimate partner’s sexual satisfaction, it is important to
Entertainment nowadays is like drug. By comparison, drugs and entertainment both mess with your head and likewise, you feel like you’re suffocating without it and it is slowly driving you crazy. For example, in Fahrenheit 451, Margaret relied so much on her entertainment that she gets to a point where she starts to call entertainment “family” and starts saying
To begin, pornography has addictive characteristics and because of those characteristics intimate relationships often suffer. Today, men and women tend to become addicted to watching pornography and use it to masturbate. It has been proven that “problematic pornography is characterized by a predominant urge for behavioral engagement, referred to as a craving” (Allen 67). If both parties of a relationship have this urge or craving for pornography, this could cause their relationship to suffer. The sexual act lacks love and intimacy and becomes mechanical or second natured. Pornography has been compared to addiction and people who are addicted enable each other. Therefore, there is no
Every individual is wired their own way, however one screen can throw that all away. All it takes is that one click, one swipe, one flip to inveigle the innocent minds of the twenty first century class. Entertainment, better known as the very factor that provides people with pleasure, has turned into a controversial topic for most individuals. They see entertainment with the main purpose of providing happiness for all, ranging from the eldest audience, to the youngest of children. However, in reality, it is quite the opposite. Nineteenth century critic Neal Gabler posed the argument that society has the capability, “to overturn all morality, to poison the springs of domestic happiness, to dissolve the ties of our social order,” to propose the
The controversial debate regarding whether media positively or negatively influences society increases each day. Despite the ability to connect with people worldwide or to stay informed with current events, any particular media can be detrimental to human development. Society pushes ideas through the television and web that can cause some form of attachment whether it be an emotional or physical one. The rise of dependency on media results in it transforming from a leisure activity to a habitual routine.
During 1998, Life the Movie: How Entertainment Conquered Reality, a book that was published by Neal Gabler brought up an argument about whether we should have entertainment or not. Back in the era, plays and music are the major entertainments that he was talking about. Compared to modern days, the entertainments had upgraded their variety and popularity; gradually, entertainment somehow became indispensable in our life. However, Gabler argued that entertainments have negative impact as well as the potential to ruin marriages and society.
The effects of media have been a topic of interest and research for many years (Viet, Štulhofer, & Hald, 2016). Multiple studies show the harmful effects of media on adolescents and young adults. It is a dominant force in our current world, with the average number of hours online up to 23.6 hours per week, as compared to the 9.4 hours per week in 2000 (Cole, Suman, Schramm, & Zhou, 2017). Excessive screen time and internet use alone has been linked to increased levels of depression and anxiety, and is discouraged for all age groups.
From the Utilitarianism view point, pornography is seen as morally right because it provides the greatest benefit of happiness for the greatest good. The Utilitarianism suggest that there is an obvious solution that is fair, and it may be one that appeals to common sense” and that “one should choose to do that which produces a better outcome for the largest number of people.” (Mosser, K. 2013, Ch. 1.6). under Utilitarianism, pornography offers benefits in marriage because couples can revive their marriage by using pornography as a new tool to explore each others intimacy and satisfy their sexual relationship. Some
Before I started to write my paper concerning the book Wired for Intimacy: How Pornography Hijacks the Male Brain, I wanted to do some research on the author just to get a background idea of what I'll be reading. William Struthers is a neuroscientist and professor of psychology at Wheaton College. This book is appropriate for retaining information on how to help ourself avoid falling into the trap of seduction in a culture where pornography is highly watched and used on a daily basis.
In Neal Gabler’s book, ‘Life the Movie: How Entertainment Conquered Reality’, he is explaining the idea that entertainment is fun and effortless and this is why a lot of people love it so much, while others go on to believe it has the ability to ruin the world. I challenge the idea that entertainment can so call destroy morality and poison happiness because of the emotions it has afflicted upon us. Entertainment was created to provide us different feelings from stories they believe we would enjoy.
Pornography can take a toll on women’s emotions as well as their self-esteem. When women first find out that their husbands have been using pornography they begin to feel that is their fault. They start to put themselves down and think that they are “sexually undesirable, worthless, weak, and stupid” (Bergner 194). For many women this could mean a big time emotional break down. Women begin to think that their husbands are using pornography because they cannot satisfy them and make them happier than the other women that they are looking at. Bergner points out that “men don’t understand what they cause their partners to feel once they have found out about their ‘second life.’” Women feel that they are constantly being compared to porn stars and not looked at for whom they really are. This makes them think that whenever they do engage in sexual activities that their husbands are not thinking about them, they are thinking about the women that they have been looking at. Bergner explains that “most relationships are ended at this point because these women will never fell the same
Over the last forty to fifty years, television has been a major topic of discussion. Specifically, many debate societal benefits to television watching. One widely accepted opinion is that watching TV makes people dumber. People have referred to it with terms like the “idiot box” and do not feel that watching TV has any benefit at all. They feel that it is a waste of time and people need to spend their hours more wisely. Others are of the opinion that TV is actually has societal benefits. From this perspective, they claim that the development of the structure of the programs now requires one to intellectually participate in watching television. Essentially, the argument is whether TV is a beneficial societal force or is it simply a
People very often debate whether technology is good or bad. Many people believe that technology can only cause harm to their lives and society, while many others strongly defend the technologies which have made their lives much more leisurely and enriching than it could have been several hundred years ago. In my opinion, both of these views are correct to an extent, but I also believe that what should be examined is not whether technology in its self is good or bad, but rather how we as humans use it.For decades now, television has been accused of contributing to the dissolution of the American family and the destruction of the minds of those who watch it. However, although the TV has been involved in this, the problem roots not with
One of the benefits of popular culture is entertainment. First, people are entertained by attending public events. For example, people attend sporting events. For example, fans can attends sporting events such football, basketball, and baseball games to watch their favorite team play. Also, several fans benefit by watching their team play on TV. Secondly, people attend other public events such as concerts of famous celebrities. Thirdly, individuals can be entertained by watching movies. In her essay Shih talks about how movies can be entertaining (389). For example, in action movies such as Mission Impossible there several Hollywood stunts that entertains the people who are watching the movie. Also, in mystery films the main goal is to keep people guessing on what is going to happen like in the movie cube. Next, entertainment benefits society through electronics. For example, people are entertained by downloading apps that allow them to listen to music, play games, and watch movies some examples of these examples of apps that people that are downloadable includes apps such as Candy Crush, Spotify, and Crackle. Furthermore, entertainment is a benefit to society because it relieves stress. For example, if a person isn’t having a great day they can click on a website similar to YouTube and watch funny video such as “ghetto chef” series by a YouTube channel called DashieXP. Also, stress is relieved by watching movies on a site such as Netflix, which features different types of categories such as tv shows, comedy, horror, and action.
