What is media? Defined by Oxford Dictionaries, the media is “The main means of mass communication (television, radio, and newspapers) regarded collectively” (Oxford University Press, 2014, pp. 1). The media can have a vast array of influences on children whether they are positive or negative. Research shows that despite the positive influences it also raises negative implication¬¬¬¬¬¬s on children’s behaviour, habits and ways of thinking through themes such as violence and aggression, sex, substance use, eating disorders, developmental concerns and school performance. Although the media may not be the leading cause to these problems, research has proven that it is a significant factor (Strasburger, Jordan & Donnerstein, 2010).
Justification for the selection of this issue
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (2011) an estimated 2.2 million children, in 2009, were reported using the internet and the percentage of children using the internet increased with age, 60% of 5-8 year olds which increases to 96% of 12-14 year olds. In 2009, coming in first, the internet was used by 85% of children for educational activities and then 69% of children used the internet for online games. 48% of 12-14 year old children visited or used social networking sites, and decreasing with age, with 11% of children aged 9-11 and 3% of children aged 5-8 using social networking sites.

Media is everywhere. Television, newspaper, cell phones, movies, as well as numerous other sources. Today, just about everyone depends on information and communication to keep their lives moving through daily activities. We need to be aware that the values we hold, the beliefs we harbor and the decisions we make are based on our assumptions, our experiences, our education and what we know for a fact. Mass media is relied on for the current news and facts about what is important and what we should be aware of. Media is considered a trustworthy source for news, information, education and entertainment. Though someone has to have thought behind an issue to write it.
Does violence on television have a negative effect on children and teenagers? The violence seen on television has had surprising negative effect. Violence shown on television causes children and teenagers to develop behavioral problems and learning disabilities. Such behavioral and learning problems include; language development, school performance / learning, cognitive development and their general behavior to others (Kinnear 27). When one thinks of media, one tends to relate media to television, news, magazines, newspaper articles, and so on. Many people do not think of media is something that portrays negative effects on young women. However, young women are more susceptible to lower self-esteem resulting in eating disorders or depression more today than ever before. The media projects negative and undermining images of women and one does not have to look very hard to realize this. The media projects images of unrealistic women who only look the way they do because of plastic surgery or airbrushing techniques. Mass media is part of the average persons everyday life, from morning to night; modern society absorbs and consumes it constantly. Adults are aware of it and see the media, as advertisements on television, the latest blockbuster at the theaters or the trendy new clothing. Children are not free from it either; they to are exposed to the medias imagery and ideals maybe more than adults are. Parents may not pay close attention to the media their children are exposed to; adults may think they are just harmless children’s toys or games. From the time they wake up and they pour themselves a bowl of brand name cereal, to the time they are put in bed with their stuff animal or toy, they are in the presence of some sort of media and its imagery.

The media is not only present in the environment but goes to lengths to control and dictate the feelings and perceptions of the current generation. Given that technology constantly reaches kids at younger ages, the prevalent existence influences children at younger years as time passes. The media can of course have good resources: education and entertainment, but at the same time can be very toxic to kids. It can result in destructive mind-sets and berserk attitudes in both boys and girls. With the media, children are bombarded by sexual images, drugs and drinking day in and day out. Popular children TV channels like Nickelodeon and the Disney channel have shows where kids are kissing and showing small suggestions of sex. Kids are like sponges: they soak up everything they see, hear and learn. Those in the media need to understand that whatever they do is being viewed by kids all over the world and they are thinking it’s okay to behave in an inappropriate manner. Media has become a powerful source of knowledge, and a great breakthrough in human history. Who can regret that media is a daily need in our lives. Media has the ability and control to adjust to all levels of knowledge in people. Media helps us to escape from our daily lives and our problems in times of stress. With the advancement in technology it has become common for infants, toddlers, and young children to be exposed to electronics such as televisions, computers, and videogames for hours at a time. Environmental factors affect children in significant ways. The effects the media and screen time children are revealed to influence their physical, cognitive, and social-emotional development. Television and media can both hinder and encouraging their growth. It is important for guardians, caregivers, teachers, whomever has a child they look after or care for, to make accommodations to construct the best possible environment for children to flourish in. At such a young age, these young humans are like sponges, they absorb much of what surrounds them. This shows that children spend more time involved in the media than they do with their parents and education. This means that the media is imposing a negative impact on children by eliminating important factors in a childs growth such as learning and spending time with family.
Mental health problems have been affecting nearly every society in some way, shape, or form for as long as we can remember. According to the World Health Organization, approximately one million people die from suicide every year (Schaefer, 2018, p. 6). Durkheim also noted that the suicide rate in a society reflects how well the people were integrated in the society (Schaefer, 2018, p. 7). The problem that I want to focus on revolves around how marketing to children teaches them values, like material objects and money, that will eventually lead to higher rates of anxiety and depression at an earlier age. It is known that the mass media strongly influences kids ages 12 to 17, but the age at which kids gain access to technology is starting to decline (Schaefer, 2018, p. 90). Gradually, we can see how the media has an overwhelming effect on the youth from the way children think about their future and their career path to the way that they play. This is directly observed in a nationwide survey of incoming college freshmen which shows that values having to do with money and power rose from 42 percent in 1966 to 82 percent in 2015 (Schaefer, 2018, p. 63). If corporations constantly promote the idea that having more things will lead to happiness, then when kids can’t have those things they start to believe that they can’t be happy without them.
The media is a platform that gives instant access all over the world and an unlimited amount of resources. It also provides immense opportunities for learning and skill development. However, the media also causes negative impacts on learning, physical health, and development. As the media grows and develops everyday, it constantly draws the public’s attention and concerns in divided opinions.
Nowadays, there are new and upgraded forms of media we can find everywhere. These media are watched by mostly children in their everyday lives. Media, such as violent movies, video games and even cartoons, it contains horrifying graphic pictures that can contribute to children growing up experiences. One more thing, a lot of news existed in the television that is significantly related to violence. Even some children exposed to those media has been already seen a murderer or people who fight and being killed which they might follow in the future. With that, although media is one of the most enjoyable and relaxing forms of entertainment available today, it is still a substantial contributor for children to become aggressive, desensitize in to violence and could produce anxiety which can affect their growing experience.
