Gay Marriage in America The United Stated of America consists of many different types of people, all who take pride in their freedom. Recently, we had seen the reality of our “freedom,” which some may not really have considered America the land of the free, homosexuals especially. Just like the “normal” citizen in America, homosexuals like the idea of the American dream as well. And most Americans believe in, or enjoy the idea of marriage. People get married all across the country; people of all races, religion, ethnicity, and as of June 26th, 2015, people of the same sex may also enjoy that privilege to be happy as well. Anyone who believes in love shall be able to marry as they please, regardless of their preferences.
Homosexuals should

The Roman Catholic Church opposes same sex marriage, and American bishops, stating that “marriage is a faithful, exclusive and lifelong union between one man and one woman,” strongly support the FMA. The United Church of Christ, in 2005, became the first major Christian denomination to give official support to same sex marriage. In 2009 the Episcopal Church voted not to block same sex marriages in dioceses that chose to perform them. More fundamentalist churches, such as the Southern Baptist Convention, however, have actively opposed same sex marriage and homosexuality. Unitarian Universalist churches unequivocally support same sex marriage. Even though certain religions may or may not support same sex marriage, attitudes among churchgoers may differ considerably from those of church officials.” And although same sex marriage is now legal, many churches are standing firm of their beliefs that gay marriage and will not allow gay couples to have their marriage ceremonies at the church. “Same sex marriage and homosexuality is a sin,” is what some people are taught and believe, which according to The Holy Bible, is very much true. In “Leviticus” 18:21-22 and “Leviticus” 20:13, the Bible talks about the sexual acts of man and man and woman and woman and how they are not right, and God does not approve of them. So yes, if you believe in The Holy Bible, it is a sin. But
The United States of America was founded as a secular sanctuary for ideals like freedom, equality, and tolerance – few will argue against that. Over its history American culture has radically evolved as it strived to meet the ideals its nation was based upon, making changes like ending slavery and providing legal equality for women and minorities, changes that at the time seemed absurd but today are unquestionable merits that define what an “American” is. The quest to reach the ultimate utopian society continues today as true Americans fight the evils of ignorance, stubborn bigotry and the fear to change that still manifest themselves in a large portion of U.S. citizens, preventing this nation from moving forward. One of the outstanding minorities still left to be granted the ideals of freedom, equality, and tolerance are homosexuals trying to obtain the right to marry the person they want to spend the rest of their life with, regardless of gender. Same-sex marriages should be recognized in the eyes of the U.S. government in accordance with its responsibility to provide all American citizens equal freedoms.
Despite the historical aspects of gay marriage, all across the United States many hetero sexual and homosexual communities have spoken up about their natural rights, freedom of religion.
The legalization of gay marriage has been a controversial issue in many state courts since the mid 1970s. Gay marriage scares many people because it strays from the norms of heterosexual relationships. Traditional American ideals have become a part of culture and society that everyone, regardless of sexual orientation, or race, or gender, expect to have as a basic human rights. Several times in history these have been identified as inalienable rights. One of the expected rights of many American citizens is the right to choose who they love, who they marry, and how they live their day to day life. When heterosexual Americans were introduced to the idea of same sex marriage, they became afraid that it would “taint the minds of the young members of the community,” since homosexualty was and still is frowned upon in the community. Thus, the homosexual community’s opportunity to freely choose how to live their life is taken
Gay marriage has slowly become a significant factor amongst individuals of today’s society. On June 26, 2015, it was ruled out by the U.S. Supreme Court that gay marriage was now legal. The first thing that I thought was that “Wasn’t it already legal in the United States?” Well, apparently no it has not been legalized in the United States! (Dumb me.) The U.S. is known to be a nation of equality and gives everyone the freedom of the speech, but it is actually a nation full of racism, sexism, and homophobias. Our country gives us the freedom to do many things, but to gay couples they don’t have much freedom as others do. We are violating their freedom because we aren’t letting them marry the one they love, so to say that everyone in the U.S. has the freedom to do anything is wrong. Our civil rights and the Constitution give us many liberties. One of our civil liberties is the pursuit of happiness, which many homosexual people are not allowed to chase, but thanks to the new ruling of the U.S. Supreme Court homosexual people are allowed to chase it. They are being looked down at and are feeling ashamed of themselves because of all the cruelty that they are receiving. Homosexual people haven’t been able to fully express themselves until it was legalized for them to fully do so. They have been fighting for the right to be married to their same sex for about a decade now, and they have finally met their goal. #Lovewins.
While some states have began to embrace the civil rights of all American people and allowing both hetero- and homo-sexual couples to marry, some states have done quite the opposite and banned same sex marriages and unions. Not all Americans feel so strongly about legalizing same sex marriage. Those against same sex marriage believe marriage has been defined as being between a man and a woman. However, that has not always been true, as explained in the beginning of this paper, the ancient people commonly wed the same gender and them and also had same sex sexual relations (ProCon.org). In fact in the first century Nero the Emperor of Rome married at least two of his lovers who were men (Chastain 19.) It was not until Christianity became a wide spread religion that sodomy and homosexuality became immoral. Those who oppose the legalization of gay marriage also believe that same sex marriage will threaten the institution of marriage. Marriages since 2011 have been at a new low, with only 52 percent of adults being married (Yen). However gays are fighting for the right to marry who they love, while heterosexual couples take that for granted. Divorce rates are currently lingering around 40-50% that is without gays being able to be married in many states. By allow homosexuals to marry their significant others, it will allow for a stronger bond and maybe bring back life into the deteriorating world of marriage. In states that do allow for same sex marriages, their divorce rates are
One of the most controversial topics that has been debated throughout the United States for decades has been Gay Marriage. Whether same-sex couples should be given the right to marry or even if same-sex couples should be given rights at all, this has been a contentious discussion which creates division and disunity throughout the country. The Supreme Court of the United States ruled that the Constitution guarantees a right to same-sex marriage. Gay marriage has been legalized in 17 states. But only 19 of 194 countries allow for gay marriage. Statistics show more than half the country supports Gay Marriage and the right for same-sex couples to be treated equal through the everyday endeavors every other couple go through. Gay Marriage should
Since religion plays a huge part in America and its government, for many years gays did not have the right to marry, because it was consider as a “sin.” As Kory Schaff says in his article entitled, “Equal Protection and Same-Sex Marriage,” “Religious views that condemn homosexuality continue to influence the exercise of political coercion resulting in the use of state power to deny individuals equal protection” (133). There are still thousands of people who view gay as a “sin” and are actually not happy with the recent changes that happened in favor of gay people. But what made the government change its ideas and laws was the LGBTQ rights movements. Thousand of people, gay or not, came together and started peaceful marchs and praids to support LGBTQ community and fought for their rights, and they were successful to achieve what they wanted. But it is important to realize that they didn’t only wanted the right of marriage. That was a huge part of it, but they are still having marchs and praide because
In the past, the definition of Marriage was a union between a man and a woman, but not anymore; today it has changed to a union between two individuals. Times have changed Mr. Prime Minister and the term of Marriage has been redefined. Society has come to learn and accept that being gay is not a choice or a sickness and that gay couple should have the right to be legally united with the ones they love. We live in the land of which my generation’s great grandparents have been fighting to establish, a county which they can be free in. We must promote equality rather than creating second class citizens. Sadly, these individuals are being deprived of their right to marry. We work, vote, and pay taxes. Just like I have my civil duties Mr. Prime Minister, I should have my civil rights. When this basic right is being prevented from these equal individuals, it sends a wrong message to the
The United States Constitution lists civil rights that everyone should be granted as a citizen of the United States. However, there has been a struggle over the civil rights of the LGBT community, and how the amendments of the constitution have been interpreted. This has become common especially regarding the Fourteenth Amendment. Currently, there is a large focus on the ongoing debate for legalizing or legalizing same-sex marriage in the United States. This issue has become so large that there is also a controversy on whether the federal government should be involved in the decision on whether to legalize it
Have you ever wonder how it felt to have a partner for 30 years, but according to the law, you are not a family member? Has your partner been sick and you could not make any decisions regarding their health, because you are not family? Also, this person for whom you have shared your life with cannot and will not qualify for health insurance as a spouse? Hospitals cannot legally allow gay partners to receive medical information about their condition without it being a blood relative. These are all just some of the difficulties that gay people have encountered for many years. We as heterosexual people do not encounter these problems and take it for granted that everybody is and should be treated equal. It is an issue about equal rights. Gay marriage is a reality, it is just that society needs to be accepting and force laws to change. Just think about this, there are approximately eight million adults that are either gay, lesbian or bisexual and compromise about three and half percent of the adult population (Gates, 2011)
There are many debates going on about whether gay-marriage should be recognized by all United States. Why is it that some states ban gay-marriage but others allow it? Why is it that some states declare that a ban on gay-marriage is unconstitutional yet others say it is not? Why is it that some states recognize gay-marriages from other states but others do not? These are some questions that should be very closely looked at if we are going to ever understand the debates that go on about gay-marriage.
Of course gay marriage affects society is several ways. Society has always looked upon gay marriage as between a man and a woman, by legalizing same-sex marriage the traditional idea of marriage is revised. If same-sex marriage is legal, should it be taught about in schools? Matt Stick asks interesting questions in his article “How could gay marriage harm anyone?” He brings up the question of “If a parent objects to a school teaching pro-homosexuality and pulls his child out of school and because of it is ridiculed and/or jailed, is he harmed?” Many people who are on the conservative side don’t want their children being exposed to learning about homosexuality. They have been brought up traditionally and their culture will be modified from
Everyone, regardless of gender orientation or sexual preference deserves equal rights, such as marriage, feeling comfortable with whom they are, and being treated like any other human being. Right now gay marriage is a hot topic in many states, however, what say should the government get in who you love and want to marry? Beyond a court room, research has been done on the idea of transgenderism and what causes people to be like that or if people are truly born in the wrong body. The people who are considered “abnormal” in society actually proactively protest for equal rights for themselves. Truly though, they are still human and should not have to fight to get married or be lab rats in a scientific study.
Why should gay marriage be legalized? Gay marriage is wrong & disrespectful to god. The institution of marriage is a tradition between a man and a woman, not two men or two women. Marriage is already threatened with high divorce rates (between 40% and 50%) and with 40.6% of babies being born to unmarried mothers. Allowing gay marriage would weaken the institution. Gay marriage could also mess up a lot of cultures, like those that believe in polygamy, which means a marriage that includes more than one partner. It could also affect other nontraditional relationships. There are also a lot of religious groups that don’t believe in gay marriage, like Christians, Catholic Churches, Islam’s, and American
The American dream is one of freedom and equality. It’s supposed to be branded in the hearts of every United States citizen however, when it comes to homosexuals, citizens of the United States wake up and the dream is demolished. Gay sex marriage is the most conflicting issue in the contemporary social world. Marriage is an association of persons through which we perceive the reflection of a particular culture. It is basically a private matter and a fundamental human right. People should have the right to decide with whom they marry, not the state. If two persons are closed to each other regardless of their gender, they
