Everyone, regardless of gender orientation or sexual preference deserves equal rights, such as marriage, feeling comfortable with whom they are, and being treated like any other human being. Right now gay marriage is a hot topic in many states, however, what say should the government get in who you love and want to marry? Beyond a court room, research has been done on the idea of transgenderism and what causes people to be like that or if people are truly born in the wrong body. The people who are considered “abnormal” in society actually proactively protest for equal rights for themselves. Truly though, they are still human and should not have to fight to get married or be lab rats in a scientific study. Gay marriage has come into a spot light in the past few years. Currently only 17 of the 50 states allow same-sex marriage in the United States (ProConorg Headlines). 33 states still have a ban on same sex marriage within state limits (NCSL). Massachusetts is currently one of the states that allow marriage between 2 people of the same gender (Law Libraries). A poll taken in Massachusetts stated that 85% of people said that it had positive or no impact (NBC News Digital). This means that 2 people of the same gender who get married really has no effect on the
public in a whole, which means that the government should not be making a big deal of something that has such a little impact on the public. In the Loving versus Virginia
A gay couple from Indianapolis who have waited to marry for years have been quoted as saying: “We 're positive because the mindset in this nation seems to be that it is unconstitutional to say that our marriages are different from any other marriage.” (pro-con,1) This means that gay people are staying optimistic. Prohibiting gay marriage is considered discrimination to gays because the government is not giving homosexual couples the same rights as gay heterosexuals, which is also unconstitutional. Therefore, same-sex couples should have access to the same marriage benefits and public acknowledgment enjoyed by heterosexual couples. (pro-con,1)
Gay marriage has slowly become a significant factor amongst individuals of today’s society. On June 26, 2015, it was ruled out by the U.S. Supreme Court that gay marriage was now legal. The first thing that I thought was that “Wasn’t it already legal in the United States?” Well, apparently no it has not been legalized in the United States! (Dumb me.) The U.S. is known to be a nation of equality and gives everyone the freedom of the speech, but it is actually a nation full of racism, sexism, and homophobias. Our country gives us the freedom to do many things, but to gay couples they don’t have much freedom as others do. We are violating their freedom because we aren’t letting them marry the one they love, so to say that everyone in the U.S. has the freedom to do anything is wrong. Our civil rights and the Constitution give us many liberties. One of our civil liberties is the pursuit of happiness, which many homosexual people are not allowed to chase, but thanks to the new ruling of the U.S. Supreme Court homosexual people are allowed to chase it. They are being looked down at and are feeling ashamed of themselves because of all the cruelty that they are receiving. Homosexual people haven’t been able to fully express themselves until it was legalized for them to fully do so. They have been fighting for the right to be married to their same sex for about a decade now, and they have finally met their goal. #Lovewins.
Same-sex Marriage is a controversial topic. Everyday across the country, there are news stories about acts of discrimination, violence, or hate crimes against same-sex couples. It is very often criticized and looked down upon because many people think that this act is “against the bible”, or it’s “disgusting”, “gross”, or “not natural”. The discrimination against same-sex marriage is preposterous and discouraging. If you really think about it, they’re just the same as any other sexuality. We all have the same hopes and dreams. We all want happy, fulfilling lives, with families and successful careers. When we’re hurt, we all bleed the same blood. “All men are created equal”, yet gays and lesbians are treated worse than other people everyday.
Out of all the thousands of rights, marriage equality; equal acceptance of same-sex marriages; is the biggest controversy. Opposite sex couples believe that gay marriage will harm or destroy marriage all together if it is allowed, because it is not a ‘traditional’ marriage between one male and one female. Only banning same-marriage will destroy marriage and society. Marriage is a keystone of our social order. Studies show that the United States has one of the highest divorce rates when compared to other countries (infogr.am). Allowing gays the privilege to get married will increase marriage rates and less couples will get divorced due to not being attracted to the opposite sex. The Williams Institute on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Law and Public Policy, which has conducted previous studies on same-sex relationships and parenting, collected administrative data on divorce rates between lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender couples from New Hampshire and Vermont. The data found that same-sex couples divorced at an average rate of 1.1 percent annually between the two states, compared with 2 percent annually between heterosexual pairs
Same-sex couples should be able to have the same benefits as hetersexual couples since there are 1,138 benefits rights and protections that married couples automatically receive once married. Also, taking these rights away from them will make things unfair. You might think, “Who says that we have to be fair?” Well the bible, the bible says to treat everybody fairly. With that, a huge amount of homophobes are christian since what they believe in is god and he made a man and a women. But, he also said to treat people fairly. If that's not enough, equality is a big protest all around the world and not allowing these people the rights and protections of marriage could not only lead to homosexual anger it could lead to anger all around the United
America! What image of America is instilled in your mind? Perhaps a land where there are strong, hardworking men and women, whose children play baseball in the summer, get great grades in the school year, and even attend church every Sunday as a family. These are qualities of a traditional American family, increasingly becoming a thing of the past. We once were a God fearing nation and we’ve become a God challenging nation. America would lose its luster if gay marriage was legalized. Six states have already legalized gay marriage and approximately 41% of the United States population supports gay marriage (“Gay Marriage Statistics”). We all claim there is someone for everyone, and if someone loves another person, then let them be, but there is no value or moral in this
Today’s society has many strong opinions on who people should marry, especially when the couple is same sex. Marriage is a commitment between two people, and overtime homosexuals have been denied their necessary rights as a human. Luckily, Americans live in a land where they can marry whomever they choose, but in many states homosexuals are left out of the deal because they choose to marry the same sex. Gay and lesbian couples a bid by laws and should be treated with the same fairness and equality as any other human being.
Some people have unnecessary opinions on other people. One of the strongest arguments that happened recently is gay marriage. Although in America it has been legalized in all fifty states and some of the battle is done, it doesn’t stop all the problems. People who are gay in states that had formerly banned gay marriage are in danger. There are those who so strongly object to same sex marriage that they could take action by harming those who benefit. Then there is the whole “people can choose to be gay”, and religion aspect to it.
Have you ever wonder how it felt to have a partner for 30 years, but according to the law, you are not a family member? Has your partner been sick and you could not make any decisions regarding their health, because you are not family? Also, this person for whom you have shared your life with cannot and will not qualify for health insurance as a spouse? Hospitals cannot legally allow gay partners to receive medical information about their condition without it being a blood relative. These are all just some of the difficulties that gay people have encountered for many years. We as heterosexual people do not encounter these problems and take it for granted that everybody is and should be treated equal. It is an issue about equal rights. Gay marriage is a reality, it is just that society needs to be accepting and force laws to change. Just think about this, there are approximately eight million adults that are either gay, lesbian or bisexual and compromise about three and half percent of the adult population (Gates, 2011)
Should gay couples be allowed to marry seems to be the question on a lot of people’s minds these days and the answer to this question is currently being addressed throughout our country. Both gay and straight people share identical desires and outcomes when it comes to love and partnerships. Everyone aspires to obtain the same goals with someone they care about, those being happiness, successfulness and living to a ripe old age. Still, some heterosexual people visualize gay people (particularly men) as only being interested in sex and are incapable of commitment. I happen to know several male couples have been together in excess of 40 years or more. These couples own homes together, work, pay taxes and contribute to the good of the country . Should gay couples be allowed to marry? I say yes.
“We’re here, we’re queer, get over it.” In 1990, these words, shouted and displayed proudly on signs waved by the activist group, Queer Nation, were revolutionary. Never, not since the Stonewall Riots, had non-straight, non-cis people been so vocal about their existence and demanded acceptance – something that straight people take for granted on a daily basis. However, in the years since the Riots, LGBT activism has become much more mainstream, no longer whispered about behind closet doors or something to be wholly ashamed of. Gay marriage is legal in all 50 United States, something that has been fought for since the conception of the LGBT movement. In fact, gay couples are routinely being featured on popular television and other forms of media. Some might say that in 2016, the dreams of the rioters in Stonewall have been realized. Marriage rights and the spotlight on nighttime television; equality seems to truly be right on the horizon.
Why should we legalize gay marriage? Or, in other words, why isn't gay marriage legalized already? Same-sex marriage is just about as humane as opposite-sex marriage. One in ten people are gay. Seems perfectly normal to me. Is it normal to you? And anyway, why don't people like two gays marrying?
Of course gay marriage affects society is several ways. Society has always looked upon gay marriage as between a man and a woman, by legalizing same-sex marriage the traditional idea of marriage is revised. If same-sex marriage is legal, should it be taught about in schools? Matt Stick asks interesting questions in his article “How could gay marriage harm anyone?” He brings up the question of “If a parent objects to a school teaching pro-homosexuality and pulls his child out of school and because of it is ridiculed and/or jailed, is he harmed?” Many people who are on the conservative side don’t want their children being exposed to learning about homosexuality. They have been brought up traditionally and their culture will be modified from
Same sex marriage, marriage amongst two people from the same biological sex or gender identity. Same sex marriages can be performed in a secular civil ceremony or in a religious setting are endorsed and practiced by various religious groups around the world.
In the United States, marriage is defined as “a formal union between a man and woman” [New York Times]. It is estimated that 229 million people currently are legally married in United States [Freedom to Marry]. But at the same time only thirty-six states including the District of Columbia is where same sex marriage is legal [Freedom to Marry]. Recent controversy about same sex marriage has become a forefront for young political activists who are trying to challenge the government whether or not it has legal justification to define whom one can and can’t marry based on the 14th amendment.
