Realism is described as a style and a type of writing where writers wanted to portray life as it really was – real lives, real jobs, and real problems. This type of writing was a reaction to and a rejection of Romanticism, which was a style of writing that focused on optimism. Having read it myself, Of Mice and Men is an interesting novel that I would recommend about two friends, George and Lennie, and their pursuit of the American dream. The Grapes of Wrath was another successful work. In fact, it was so successful that it earned Steinbeck a Pulitzer Prize for Literature (Newman and Layfield 89).
