America is home to many great writers whom come different backgrounds. American authors like John Steinbeck who add biographical elements into their pieces of writing. John Steinbeck, one of the most honorable authors of time, is known for receiving Nobel Prize, California commonwealth club medal, Pulitzer Prize, and other great accomplishments towards publishing sixteen novels. Steinbeck’s realist style of writing and life experiences impacting his life show the reader he’s been through a lot in his life and adds plenty of meaning into his stories. While residing in California, Steinbeck was concerned with migrant labor camps, and even traveled with migrants in Hooverville’s to observe conditions of camps. Steinbeck devoted himself to writing his famous works such as; Of Mice and Men, The Grapes of Wrath, Tortilla Flat, and Cannery Row. Some of Steinbeck’s pieces like Of Mice and Men and The Grapes of Wrath were such hits they were made into movies. Before Steinbeck’s death on December 20th, 1968 he was awarded Nobel Prize for literature in 1962, National book award, and Pulitzer Prize for his lifetime accomplishments.
John Steinbeck became the voice of the American agricultural population. Growing up in the frontier land and working on farms during early years developed Steinbeck’s understanding and sympathy for rural families. After his father’s business collapsed, Steinbeck worked on a ranch with migrant workers, which sparked his interests in the struggles and impoverished lives of the poor. These events influenced his idea for his popular books Of Mice and Men and Tortilla Flat. The novel Mice of Men is based off John Steinbeck’s manual labor job where he met the average migrant workers like the main characters; George and Lennie.
