Education has undergone significant changes because of the development of information and communication technology over the 21st century (Lin & Jou, 2012:2). As a convenient and inexpensive way to gain knowledge while pursuing higher education, online learning, a form of training or teaching that takes place over the Internet, has been considered as an alternative to traditional classroom learning (Zhang et al, 2004). This essay will argue that even though online learning has benefit such as flexibility which could outweigh traditional learning, traditional classroom learning might still not be entirely replaced. This essay will discuss positive and negative aspects of online and traditional learning in terms of four criteria:
Education is an essential element in societies throughout the world. For many years education has been provided in classrooms on campuses worldwide, but there has been a change made to the conventional method of classroom learning. With the advancements in technology, education has been restructured so that it may be accessible to everyone through taking courses online.
Online learning provides endless resources for students and teachers alike and the freedom to maintain a schedule that is not based off of class times. The freedom to decide when to study is nice, but it can also prevent one from developing new friendships. In classrooms, students are given the chance to talk and form both friendships and study groups. While distance education may lower the possibility of forming new friendships, it does eliminate the distractions often found in classrooms. Classroom distractions can cause stress and lack of focus, neither of which are beneficial. Through online learning, those distractions are removed. Distractions such as those may not be avoidable for all, though. For those who do not have computer or
Would you prefer having all your quizzes, assignments, and lectures on a computer screen or a traditional classroom teacher where it is mandatory to listen to their lectures and their assignments are on paper? There are both advantages and disadvantages to a traditional setting and an online education. The advantages of online learning are that you get immediate feed back whether it's a test, quiz or an assignment you get results of your score and what you got wrong in the matter of just submitting your work. that gives you more time to look back at what you did wrong so you can fix it and restudy the material given. Online education is a type of distance learning. The student is taking courses without attending a school or university. Instead, online students and teachers interact over the Internet. Online classes can teach students educational responsibility. By forcing them to access the online portal to participate in reading the textbook/lectures and doing the assignments. It is a well-known fact that sometimes teachers are not able to respond to challenging questions and students have to look for the answers themselves. When I, as a student experienced the same, I made the decision to learn such topics from internet sources to compliment what we have studied in class. The result was astonishing; even though I haven’t fully studied in the classroom, I could pass my exams successfully. So, I came to the conclusion that online education may easily surpass the traditional, classroom-study one. However, there are some people who believe it is impossible . I have compared both pros and cons of 2 education styles, and detected in which field they will be beneficial, and in which their implementation will cause
One more piece of the puzzle to consider, and this one I would put in the pro column for online learning, is environment…and more specifically, distance. Distance learning has enabled me to get a Master 's degree. It’s a dream of mine to attend UA, but now that I have a career and family it’s not practical to move them to Tuscaloosa for this. I believe there are other people who are further away than myself who are attending this class as well!! The online learning world has opened the possibility for students to attend college no matter where they are located. That is absolutely a benefit. It also allowed many of us to have real life jobs and attend school as well.
