Unemployment has always taken America into its darkest ages; therefore, the United States needs to stay away from automation in order to prevent another employment downfall. By introducing intelligent machines into America, businesses will seek to acquire some of the technology. Since the machines don’t require a wage, businesses will increase in profit making them big barrels of money. Even if the machines are at high cost, it doesn’t mean businesses will forget about it, yet they know they will benefit on the long term by getting the machines. As a result, employees will start getting fired from their jobs, getting replaced by robots. This will ruin families and the peaceful society that has been present through the years.

The term “Artificial Intelligence or AI” is no longer an obscure term to us. Being surrounded by smart and intelligent devices in our everyday life has made us aware about this technical jargon called “Artificial Intelligence or AI”, which is used to refer to machine intelligence in the field of Computer Science. As artificial intelligence continues to progress, machines are becoming smarter and more efficient than human beings. So, people are getting more concerned and apprehensive regarding their jobs after witnessing their jobs being replaced by robots and machines. Artificial Intelligence replacing human jobs frequently gets media attention and it has been made a huge deal even though it is not. AI gradually taking all our jobs and destroying the economic system is just an absurd and exaggerated claim made by few media outlets and self-proclaimed tech pundits. On the contrary, AI has potential to help us to get better at our jobs and create more job opportunities in the long run.

When it comes to using Artificial Intelligence, one should be able to recognize their limits in doing so. In the story Marionettes Inc, and the movie, Ex Machina, both mediums displayed a clear and concise message about Artificial Intelligence, that is, when you create or utilize an AI robot with human-like qualities, there is always a possibility that it may turn against their rightful owner or creator, and will ultimately lead to their downfall.

What’s the first thing you think of when someone says, “Artificial Intelligence”? The Terminator? Perhaps the Matrix trilogy? Ever since the inception of the computer, science fiction has brought us scenes of super-intelligent computers who want to take over all of mankind. In reality, Artificial Intelligence is still in it’s infancy, and has done much more good for humans than bad. Over time, people’s perspective of AI has changed drastically. We have gone from thinking that AI will take over the world and obliterate mankind to thinking about all the benefits we can get from AI. Society today is greatly influenced by technology and the impact it has had within the past 20 years. One of the largest breakthroughs, though, is Artificial Intelligence (A.I.). The technology associated with A.I. has greatly developed in the past years, and is only making devices smarter. When someone mentions technology, or even the technological breakthroughs the world has gone through recently, many people go straight to smartphones and computers. A.I. is often overlooked, or put into a general category of "technology". Yet, artificial intelligence is something that should we not be so quick to dismiss, and should be something that gets people talking and even excited for what the future holds.

For those who view AIs as dangerous, they call for strict laws and regulations as they don’t want to lose control of the AIs. One example of strict laws comes from Stuart Russel who argues that AIs’ only purpose should be to learn human values, but never understand those values, giving it “no purpose of its own and no innate desire to protect itself” (58). Thus, AIs would only understand their existence in terms of human values, unable to make choices beyond this point of reference. This would prevent AIs from making their own decisions while also stopping programmers from making further improvements, ruining any beneficial effects AIs may have for the future and treating them unethically. Therefore, the system of laws needed for AIs needs to be strict, but not suffocating to the point that they can’t develop or have rights. Ashrafian asserts that people should enforce a Roman-like system of laws that sets AIs as a lower status than humans, but with the ability to gain rights (325). Even though this would also start AIs as a lower status, like Russel suggests, it still gives them the ability to grow and gain more rights in society, no longer hindered by rigid laws. Additionally, with the intention to make AIs with intelligence equal or superior to humans, it would not be ethically correct to trap these beings into an oppressive cycle of never allowing them to have rights. In “A Defense of the Rights of Artificial Intelligences” by Eric Schwitzgebel and Mara Garza, a professor of philosophy and a researcher of artificial moral cognition respectively, propose “it is approximately as odious to regard a psychologically human-equivalent AI as having diminished moral status on the ground that it is legally property as it is in the case of human slavery” (108). One of the biggest controversies with the advancement of artificial intelligence is the debate on job automation. Many people believe that artificial intelligence will advance to become better than humans and replace humans in most jobs. The opposite belief is that AI will be used to improve the standard of living and will be a tool to support humans, not replace them. Job automation has many benefits such as performing more dangerous jobs and complete tasks that humans do not desire to do. Even though job automation has benefits, there are many people who believe robots will take over the job market and the unemployment rate will skyrocket. Today, technology allows us to check the weather without lifting a finger from bed by simply saying, “Hey Siri, how’s the weather looking?” When we step into our car and open Spotify, a new, personalized playlist is already curated for the morning commute. When we finally get to school or work and open Facebook, a perfect news feed that contains eye-grabbing information is waiting to be explored. These services are incredibly convenient and helpful, but we must pause for a minute to consider the consequences.

Even though AI can be devastating to most workers. Humans can still be competitive in the job market by getting jobs that require a wide range of skills. Also, Humans are very creative and adapt easily to their surroundings– unlike AI. With these traits even if the "AI Revolution" does leave many workers jobless, many people will soon find a way to stay in the job market.

A.I. must be developed to benefit all types of people. The problem with creating such an effective machine is that one machine will be able to do the jobs of several humans. As humans, we need to stay ahead of the game and prepare ourselves to work in different fields in years to come. Jobs such as watering, fast food restaurants, golf caddies, and many other simple yet required tasks will be overtaken by robots. These jobs will take away a lot of work for the lower class, which is why it will become vital to attend colleges and universities to better oneself and the skills one has in order to always be needed by society. In discussions of Artificial Intelligent (AI), one controversial issue that people have brought up in regards to humanoid Artificial intelligent robots is the fear that they will be created to be so “intelligent” that they are able to make decision on their own and do whatever they want to do. Current AI is limited to performing narrow tasks, but the long-term goal is to create AI that would outperform humans at almost every cognitive task. On the other hand, people like the co-founder of Tesla, Elon Musk wants to stop the A.I apocalypse, and people like him are afraid that advanced AI is around the corner and will have a greater intelligence than humans. Many people maintain they don’t care about AI and what it can or cannot do, while others are clueless to what AI even stands for. My own view on AI robots is that they can be a great step in helping people in many ways. It will revolutionize healthcare and be able to assist in emergency response systems.
