Question
Chapter 21, Problem 1E
Interpretation Introduction
To determine: the type of molecules that trigger our sense of smell.
Expert Solution & Answer
Answer to Problem 1E
Solution
Explanation of Solution
Aromatic compounds are known for their aroma or scent. They have delocalized electrons and p-orbitals perpendicular to each other. Molecules with this kind of structure trigger the receptors in our nose and bind with them. All molecules cannot fit the receptors. These fits and hence we can smell them.
Conclusion
Aromatic hydrocarbons and some non aromatic like esters trigger our senses for smell.

Suppose a chemist synthesizes a new chemical that turns out to have an odor. Presumably, we do not have a specialized receptor for that chemical. Explain how our receptors detect it.
