Abstract: The main purpose of the experiment was to test the idea that water would move from the higher concentration to the lower concentration. In order to test this theory, we placed potato slices in 7 different containers, each containing different concentrations of NaCl, to measure the weight change from osmosis. The containers ranged from 0M NaCl all the way to .6M NaCl. We measured the potato slices before and after placing the slices in the solutions and recorded the net change in weight

mass. From these results, it can be concluded that as the salt concentration get higher, the potato’s mass starts to decrease. When there is barely any salt in the solution the mass will increase. When comparing the turgidity of the cells a similar type of pattern emerged. As the salt concentration got higher, the potato became flaccid. However, at lower salt concentrations the potato remained crisp. An increase in the salt concentrations ended up changing the turgidity of the potatoes and making them

calculated the concentration of chloride in the second solution, we subtracted the large concentration by the known concentration of our second solution. The result of this subtraction was 0.68 (+/-) 0.10 M of chloride ion. Finding a standard chloride concentration in seawater was a challenge due to different seas containing different concentrations of chloride ions. We chose a chloride concentration source of 19,400 mg/L (or 35 ppt), which converts to 0.55 M of chloride ions (1). This concentration was provided

This experiment was carried out with many precautions to minimise error margins. These measures included putting the measuring cylinders in the water bath/ ice box/ and bench top at the same time, using the same capsicum extract, having the same person record the results and add the capsicum extract. However there were still some results that exhibited error such as collecting the measuring cylinders at different times which prolonged the exposure, as well as have a delay between starting the timer

I am going to investigate osmosis when potato is placed in different  concentrations of sucrose. I am aiming to witness osmosis in 5  different concentrations of sucrose. I will use 5 varying  concentrations so that I have a wider spread to compare the results,  and check that I don’t have any anomalies  Prediction  Osmosis is the process of diffusion of water molecules from a weaker  solution into a stronger solution, through a semi permeable membrane.  The tiny pores in the membrane

solution to try to equalize the concentration. The water molecules are always moving, and the rate of the movement depends on the concentration gradient. The bigger the difference in concentration the faster the molecules move down the concentration gradient. To figure out what diffusion was, I used the book and my notes from the lecture. There are three types of diffusion: Hypertonic, Hypotonic and Isotonic. The Hypertonic solution has a higher concentration of NaCl. The Hypotonic solution

Introduction: This experiment was used to examine the hypothesis that: Osmosis is dependent on the concentrations of the substances involved. Diffusion is the passage of solute molecules from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration (Campbell & Reece, 2005). An example is ammonia diffusing throughout a room. A solute is one of two components in a chemical solution. The solute is the substance dissolved in the solution. The solvent, the other component, is any liquid in

supernatant liquid and denser slurry having a higher concentration of solids. This is usually accomplished by allowing the particles to settle through the force of gravity, mechanically using centrifugal force, or electrostatically using an electric current. Continuous sedimentation tanks are usually used in wastewater treatment facilities to separate suspended particles from wastewater. This experiment aims to determine the effect of initial concentration and initial height of the slurry on its settling

Scientist’s topic is about electrolyte concentration in different types of drinks. The question the scientist is trying to answer is “Which drink has the highest lectrolyte concentration for replenishing more electrolytes during and after physical activity?”. The independent variable is the type of drink, the dependet variable is the conductance (measured in amps) and the control variable is water. To find out which drink will have the highest concentration of electrolyes, the scientist would have

The goal of the lab was to discover the concentration of phosphate in various colas in order to help with a project for a major cola company. Before we could accomplish this final goal, a Spec 20 was used to test three colors of food colorings. A Spec 20 is an instrument used to “measure the intensity of a light beam before and after it passes through a sample and compares these two intensities” (What does a Spectronic 20 measure). The instrument is able to measure the percent transmittance and
