Test 7. Solubilites of lead(II) salts
Further difference between lead and other elements in the Group 14, demon-
strated in this test, is the very low solubility of Pb2+ salts in comparison to Sn²+
and Ge²+. You need a solid knowledge of the L'Châtelier's principle to follow the
material and some points covered in Section 2.4.
Experiment 3.The Chemistry of Groups 13 and 14-Experimental Section
Take three clean and dry test tubes. In two test tubes place a spatula-tip of
lead nitrate and in the third one two spatula tips of KI. Add about 0.5 mL of dis-
tilled water in all three test tubes to dissolve the solids. To the first Pb(NO3)2
test tube add a few drops of dilute HCl. Gently heat the test tube in a water bath
until the solid dissolves. Take the tube out of water bath and let it cool down.
To the second Pb(NO3)2 test tube slowly add the solution of KI from the
third test tube. Observe the formation and disappearance of the precipitate.
CAUTION:
All lead compounds
are very toxic!
Properly dispose of
the waste from this
test!
